A Silent Film is an English rock band from Oxford, England within the UK. Founded in 2005, the band has been active since then, with its music crossing the Atlantic Ocean and making waves all over the US. Their music, often described as a mix of alternative rock and piano rock, has also seen them win a number of awards with chart topping singles and albums. Songs and albums from this British band have been released by record labels such as Xtra Mile Recordings, CMI and Bieler Bros. The band's members today are vocalist, pianist and guitarist Robert Stevenson, bassist Ali Hussain and drummer Spencer Walker. Many come to their concerts, often in the US, after buying A Silent Film tickets.
A Silent Film's music has been praised as echoing that of The Killers, Coldplay and Snow Patrol, three of the most iconic bands in rock music. The band traces its beginnings back to 2000, when three of the members, Robert Stevenson and Spencer Walker were members of Shouting Myke, an English rock band. In 2005, two of Shouting Myke's members left the band, with Ali Hussain joining the band as the new bassist.
The three member band was then renamed and relaunched, as A Silent Film. The name of the band was taken up after a song was written based off a Charlie Chaplin movie song, as a nod to the many Charlie Chaplin silent films. In 2007, the renamed band released their first song as an EP dubbed The Projectionist. They then went on to play at the prestigious BBC Introducing Stage at Glastonbury later the same year. In 2008, they released their first album, titled The City That Sleeps, much to the joy of many in the UK.
Their first album featured Sam Williams as the producer, with one of its songs going on to rank number one on the Hottest Downloads chart by the Sunday Times Culture magazine. The album received a lot of praise, with some comparing it to Coldplay's albums and songs. Following the release of their debut, they went on a UK tour and then a Portugal tour, where they became massively popular with their song, You Will Leave A Mark ranking number one on the Portuguese singles chart. Their debut album also topped the Portuguese singles chart.
The band continued touring much of Europe, even playing in the US, performing and touring with the likes of OneRepublic, The Smashing Pumpkins, Scouting for Girls, The Temper Trap, Biffy Clyro, Sleigh Bells, Fitz & The Tantrums, Athlete, Civil Twilight and Blue October. Their debut album's song continued making waves, going on to become an iTunes Discovery Download with more than a hundred thousand downloads in a short time. You Will Leave A Mark also went on to win an XFM New Music Award nomination.
In 2010, their debut album was released in the US, with two new songs. One of the songs from the album was featured on the iTunes Celebrity Playlist podcast by Linkin Park, the world famous rock band. In the US, their songs ranked first on radio on the Most Requested Playlists. Awards such as Sirius Alt Nation Award for the Best In Studio Performance were won, with one of their songs ranking fourth on the Song of the Year ranking. The band's songs also went on to top charts such as the Billboard Hot Modern Rock Tracks chart.
In 2011, they successfully played at SXSW, one of the biggest festivals in the US, much to the joy of their many fans who had bought A Silent Film tickets for the concert.
In the US, the band's music has been featured on such shows as The Hills on MTV, Investigation Discovery and The Hard Times of RJ Berger. Their songs have also appeared on the video game, Rockband. In 2012, they released their second album, Sand & Snow, to massive critical and commercial acclaim.
