Aided by some great MTV videos, the music band known as 38 Special enjoyed great popularity in the USA in 1980s. It was a time when 38 Special tickets were usually at the top of the fans lists as their live concerts used to be awesome. It gave to the fans a string of successful albums and chart topping singles like the 1982 "Caught Up In You", 1983 single "If I'd Been The One", the radio favorite, “Where You Belong" and the Billboard's adult contemporary chart topping hit "Second Chance" in 1989. The group's earlier reputation was built on its brand of Southern boogie and blues-rock followed by a more arena rock style that sold millions of albums and garnered large following worldwide. Since its inception 38 Special has released over fifteen albums with few going platinum as well.

Going thirty five years back, it was 1975 when two neighboring friends in Jacksonville, Florida, a 23-year-old Donnie van Zant and Don Barnes, formed the band. After a while they recruited other members like Ken Lyons as bassist, a guitarist called Jeff Carlisi, and two drummers namely Jack Grondin and Steve Brookins. Donnie was the younger brother of Skynyrd lead singer Ronnie who died in 1977 in a plane crash. That same year, Donnie and the band released their first album. Sadly, none of their songs made it into top 40 hits. This propelled the band to start touring around the country and spreading the word. In 1981, they decided to introduce a harder rock sound in the album, Wild Eyed Southern Boys which instantly received favorable reviews and propelled the making of a broader fan base. With its smooth vocal stride, the single "Hold on Loosely (But Don't Let Go"), peaked easily at number 27 giving the band its first Top 40 single. With many other catchy tunes in that album, 38 Special harnessed a distinct guitar rock sound and seemed more confident. It was this sound and music style that enabled them to distinguish themselves from other FM rock bands of the time. What followed was one hit single after the other and soon the band landed in the mainstream rock music industry. Throughout the 80s, 38 Special continued to enjoy wide acclaim racking up 4 platinum records. In 1987 Barnes and Brookins left. Barnes was replaced by Danny Chauncey. The 80s closed with Rock and Roll Strategy giving yet another hit single 'Second Chance' that made it one great decade for the band both in terms of sales and popularity.

However, their good fortune took a nose dive in the nineties as the group's sound fell from favor and so did the sales of 38 Special tickets! Even with Barnes back in the band, a new drummer called Scott Hoffman along with the keyboardist Bobby Capps added to the line-up as well as frequent performances in clubs in the Southern part of the country, 38 Special faded away from the mainstream scene. Their 1991 album, Bone Against Steel failed to catch the fans' attention. For the next six years, they didn't release another album. Then in 1997 a comeback album titled Resolution on Razor & Tie Records was released. The band experimented on this album with some new styles adding more acoustic guitars, mandolins, and harmonica on some songs resulting in a great album - may be not as pop-friendly as Special Forces but it had really heartfelt lyrics on some songs like "Find My Way Back", "Changed By Love", "After The Fire Is Gone", etc. Overall it was a mature songwriting approach that was quite evident and much appreciated by the listeners. Since Resolution, 38 Special has released three more albums, among those one featured Christmas songs. Live at Sturgis followed in 1999. In 2002 the band made the soundtrack for an independent film titled Super Troopers that had its premiere at the Sundance Film Festival.

Beginning from straight-ahead Southern boogie, to falling halfway between country blues-rock and arena-rock and then again touching base with their Southern rock roots, the band's sound has continued to evolve over the years. Today after more than 3 decades, 38 Special is still playing over hundred shows per year. Only last year, they were included in the Can't Stop Rockin tour with Styx and REO Speedwagon. At one of these concerts, when they opened with their signature hit single, "Rockin' Into the Night," the whole crowd of young as well as middle aged men and women were instantly brought to their feet.
