311- Pronounced as "three eleven", is an American alternative rock band who started off from Omaha, Nebraska. Their unique musical makeup includes a variety of musical styles including rap, punk rock, ska, reggae, and funk.

The band achieved commercial success due to its extensive and loving fan-list. Since their self-titled album in 1995, almost all of their albums have been in the top 15 of the Billboard 200. 19 of their singles have received significant radio airplay since "Do You Right" in 1993; five of those songs being top 3 hits on Billboard's Modern Rock Tracks chart.

311 was formed in late 1989 by four friends; Nick Hexum, Chad Sexton, Aaron Wills, and Jim Watson. Chad and Jim began playing all over Omaha in bars and pubs as the "Fish Hippos" while trying to convince Nick to come back from Germany and join the band to open a show for Fugazi. Nick agreed but wanted to change the band's name. Meanwhile P-Nut had been performing solo in talent shows and such under the name '311', making fun of Jim Watson for getting arrested and ticketed for indecent exposure in a hot tub in Omaha. The code violation on the ticket was '311', so the name was suggested to Nick, he loved it, and thus 311 was born. Though the band received criticism due to perceived racism as "311" is used as a symbol, particularly in prison tattoos, for the Ku Klux Klan.

In 1990, Hexum started his own little record company, called What Have You Records. Their first release Dammit! was released that year in record stores throughout Omaha. In 1991, Jim left the band and was no longer a member and was replaced by Tim Mahoney. In 1991, they released their second independent release album Unity and was released with far greater hit numbers. The band began to headline shows in local clubs, such as The Ranch Bowl and Sokol Hall, and became a local success.

1992 changed their destiny! SA Martinez, who had been making various appearances with 311 as a vocalist, had officially been asked to join the band. The newly formed 311 recorded a six-track demo, called Hydroponic, and moved to LA. Within the first few months, 311 was signed to Capricorn Records.

Their first major Music record was released in 1993. The single "Do You Right" received airplay on modern rock stations and reached #27 on Billboard's Modern Rock Tracks chart. Unfortunately, they were not that a huge success, but the band kept their spirits high and never gave up!

The following year, they released their second studio album, Grassroots. The album reached #8 on the Billboard Top Heatseekers chart and #193 on the Billboard 200, and tracks from Grassroots began popping up on college charts nation wide. It was during this time that 311's loyal fan base came into being, due to their non-stop touring and always playing to crazy crowds.

In 1995, 311 released what was to be their biggest selling CD, the self-titled 311. Produced by Ron St. Germain the album was recorded live in contrast to their previous albums. The first single "Don't Stay Home" was a meek success but the follow-up single "Down," released 14 months after the album, gained success on mainstream radio. The song hit #1 on the Modern Rock chart. The third single, "All Mixed Up" was a huge hit, reaching #4 on the Modern Rock chart. These singles raised the album to platinum status in 1996 and ultimately reached a triple platinum status!

Evolver, came in 2003 and brought with it the clear-cut guitar-heavy sound that the band gained fame for. Though people held various opinions, but many of their core fans considered the album another masterpiece.

In 2004, 311 covered the Cure's "Love Song" which became a major hit on the Modern Rock Tracks chart. It also reached #59 on the Hot 100. It was featured on the soundtrack for the motion picture 50 First Dates and then a few months later on their own Greatest Hits '93-'03. The album also featured two new songs. One of these new tracks, "First Straw", was released as a single and reached #14 on the Modern Rock Tracks chart.

On August 16, 2005, 311 released their eighth studio album, titled Don't Tread on Me. "Don't Tread On Me," reached #2 on the Billboard Modern Rock chart and #1 at R&R. The next two singles, "Speak Easy" and "Frolic Room", did not receive the same success as the first.

In January 2007 311 stepped back into their Hive Studios with Nick's younger brother Zack Hexum. They recorded a title song for the upcoming film Surf's Up by the name of "Reggae Got Soul". The film and soundtrack are due out in June.

The band is working on new material for the next album, expected to be out in 2008. In April of 2007 311 posted a blog on their Myspace confirming this year's "Summer Unity Tour", which will run from late June through late August.

When Police Departments started using the code 311 for citing "indecent exposure" on radio scanners, it probably never occurred to them that they'd have to be more specific if there was a performance in town by the rock band a.k.a. as 311. Imagine the local fuzz broadcasting, "Attention all units... 311 at CenturyLink Center, in front of 18,000, proceed immediately". Nevertheless, the band has been attracting all kinds of attention since their formation some two decades ago.

Vocalist/guitarist Nick Hexum, vocalist/DJ S.A. Martinez, guitarist Tim Mahoney, drummer Chad Sexton and bassist P-Nut came together to form 311 in 1990. The band soon translated their hometown success into a nationwide recognition.

311's third studio album Music notched the first cut in their musical niche by becoming gold. With the following Grassroots also striking gold, their fifth eponymous album shot straight to the top on the Billboard Heatseekers Albums Chart in 1995 and got stamped with a triple platinum certification, "Exposing" the band's musical attributes with hit numbers such as "Down" and "All Mixed Up". The follow-up albums entered the top-ten slot in the Billboard 200.

Prior to 311, the band members had already started honing their skills as part of acts such as The Eds, Fish Hippos and Unity. With early nineties being spent mostly on the road, not even stopping when their paraphernalia got burnt, 311 has gone on to perform with notable acts such as Korn, Deftones and co-headlined tours with the likes of Jay-Z and Snoop Dog.
