Named for John Young, the City of Youngstown was incorporated in 1867. Mr. Young purchased the entire township, occupying an area of approximately 15,000 acres, for $16,000 in 1797 from the United States Government.

The city in the U.S. state of Ohio, Youngstown is the county seat of Mahoning County. Traditionally known as a center of steel production, the City was forced to redefine itself when the U.S. steel industry fell into decline in the 1970s. This declined left communities throughout the region without major industry. As of 2007 U.S. Census Bureau estimates, the region had a population of 73,818 inhabitants.

Youngstown is a home to over 40 museums, historic sites, art galleries, ballet/opera companies, live theater and performing arts centers. Moreover, the community"s range of attractions has increased notably in past recent years.

In 1975, the Youngstown Area Arts Council was founded to support all visual and performing arts in the region. The community"s culture center is Powers Auditorium that serves as the region"s primary music hall while providing a home for the Youngstown Symphony Orchestra.

Powers Auditorium is one of five auditoriums located within the city limits. Not less impressive is the Ford Recital Hall, built in 2006 as an addition to newly renovated Powers Auditorium. Also located in the downtown area is the Oakland Center for the Arts. The Venue puts together locally produced plays and is complimented by the Youngstown Playhouse. Despite intermittent financial problems, the Youngstown Playhouse has served the area for more than 80 years.

To make the most of your time, get your tickets to the DeYor Performing Arts Center which serves as a home to the Youngstown Symphony Orchestra. The Symphony Orchestra includes the Edward W. Powers Auditorium, Ford Family Recital Hall at the Eleanor Beecher Flad Pavilion, Adler Art Academy and Overture Restaurant. Since the City offers something for everyone, history lovers can also find something of their interest.

Youngstown"s most widely known museum, Butler Institute of American Art is located on the northeastern edge of the Youngstown State University campus. It was the first museum in the country dedicated to American art. Stroll through the city and you will witness precious gems at every corner.

Across the street from the Butler stands the McDonough Museum of Art. Owned and operated by YSU, the McDonough was established in 1991. The museum has showcased contemporary art and organized programs for students on campus and throughout the surrounding area.

Take some time out for yourself and make a trip to the Youngstown"s most serene, tranquil and popular parks. Mill Creek Park is a five-mile-long stretch of landscaped woodland reminiscent of Rock Creek Park in Washington, D.C. Established as a township park in 1981; it is the oldest park district in Ohio.

Mill Creek Park"s highlights include the restored 19th century Lanterman"s Mill, the rock formations of Bear"s Den, scores of nature trails, the Fellows Riverside Gardens and Nature Center, and the "Cinderella" iron link bridge.

Also of noteworthy is the Nature Center"s popular lookout point, offering visitors contrasting views of the area. From the south side, visitors are presented with a view of canopied woodlands overlooking Lake Glacier and from the north side, downtown Youngstown is visible. The popular lookout point features two 18-hole golf courses, playgrounds, athletic fields, and picnic areas.

As for the sports, Youngstown State University features one of the nation"s best collegiate football programs. The Mahoning Valley Thunder is the only professional arena football team which played its inaugural game at the Chevrolet Center in 2007.

The Youngstown Steelhounds ice hockey too calls the Chevrolet Center its home. It is the new entertainment venue playing host to hockey and indoor football games and other sports competitions, concerts, motocross, circuses, ice shows, consumer and trade shows and other special events.

Youngstown is proud to have two area hockey teams: the Youngstown Steelhounds and the Mahoning Valley Phantoms. The Steelhounds began their inaugural season at the newly completed Chevrolet Centre in the fall of 2005. The club competes in the Central Hockey League (CHL) whereas the Phantoms compete at the Ice Zone in Boardman.
