Dating back to history, the Thornhills were the first family to move into the area in 1860s which is presently known as Winter Haven. They were then followed by several other families. The area was plotted in 1884 while the name Winter Haven was adopted by the people of the area in 1885.

It was based upon the fact that the city had a very pleasant climate during winter. The city was incorporated in 1911 and since then it had become a place worth seeing rather a heaven on earth would be more appropriate to call.
