There are four tournaments held, i.e. Gentlemen's Singles, Ladies' Singles, Gentlemen's Doubles, Ladies' Doubles and Mixed Doubles. Apart from the above mentioned tournament, youth tournaments are also played.
Wimbledon city was not as famous a U.K city earlier as it is considered now after it became home to tennis. Boris Becker, Navratilova, Agassi, Hingis, Sharapova, Pete Sampras, or be it the William sisters these are people who have not only been associated with tennis but have also won the Wimbledon Champion ship.
Though now Wimbledon is famous because of tennis, surprisingly, this was not the first sport that brought fame for Wimbledon. It was football and rifle shooting, and then tennis took the lead. The horse racing and motorcycle speedway have also been a charm of the Wimbledon Stadium. Although Wimbledon city gathers fame because of the tennis champion ship, it does not ignore the facilities for people who look beyond sports to visit the city.
Hence forth, recreational facilities, park areas, restaurants, pubs can all be looked to as well. These collections are also enjoyed as fortnight tennis champion ship when the streets are crowded with people pouring in from different cities / countries. Wimbledon village also has a Buddhist temple, where public entrance is permissible especially on 15th August every year due to a festival held there.
A city that comprises of schools, parks, theatres is just like any other city visited. However, Wimbledon specialty remains tennis championship and this sport brought with it international fame to the city. Wimbledon happens to be the only Grand event played on grass courts. It all started when All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club were responsible for staging the world's leading tennis tournament.
The game initiated from a small scale and gradually gained momentum and is considered as an international sport on the famous Wimbledon playground. There is always room for improvement, and with passing time a lot has been added and subtracted for the people at large. For instance, when the game came into being till 1921, winners of the previous year competition were automatically given a position in the final round of the new year competition, which led the winners to retain their name as winner for many years.
This act began to be seen as a draw back till 1921, the winners of the previous year's competition were given a chance to participate in the final round of the tournament every year. This led to many winners retaining their titles for successive years, as they were able to rest while their opponent competed from the start of the competition.
From 1922 onwards till date, the title holders played through from the start of the championships. Apart from this change, other changes occurred such as, change in rules of the game, addition of uniforms, the ticket price fluctuation etc.
As for the tennis ground. a retractable roof is being planned which is designed merely to provide protection to all, players and spectators from extreme weather conditions which can hinder the game. This retractable roof is expected to be completed in the year 2009.

A new week, a new work always immense from a Monday. Similarly, the set day to start off with the championship is also a Monday that falls between the dates of 20-26 June and carries on further for two weeks time. Prior to the two weeks, a warm up champion ship is played that makes the players fully equipped with being ready for the real game.
Now is the part where information regarding the players takes place. In Wimbledon tennis champion ship, a total of 128 players participate featuring for the single events, 64 players are paired for the doubles, whereas 48 pairs in the mixed doubles are presented. Here is how the players are selected for the tournament.
A management committee and the referee firstly evaluate all the applications for their entry and then conclude as to which players seek admission to play it. A not so high ranked player may be given a chance to play; it solely depends on the committee in charge. Such entries come under the wild card entry, which means that a player who had gained good reputation in the previous games or who would be energetic enough to catch the attention of the spectators could be liable to play Wimbledon.
The encouraging part is that the players who do not qualify for high ranks nor do they receive wild cards have a chance of participating in a qualifying tournament which is held one week prior to Wimbledon. Similarly, players who seek admission for the junior tournaments from the recommendations of their national tennis associations with the last verdict given by the Management committee of Wimbledon.
After the selection of the qualified players is done, then immense the great Wimbledon tennis championship. Just imagining the whole picture invokes energy in one self, imagine what pleasure is gained when the imagination takes a realistic approach, and one is actually sitting in the stadium full of spectators restless and curious to view the tournament with the naked eye.
