Incorporated in 1932, the Village of Westbury is located in the Nassau County of New York. The villages population mainly consists of African Americans, Hispanics and Italian Americans. It was in 1658, when the settlers arrived for the very first time in Westbury along with their slaves.
A notable number of settlers that were among them were Quakers. Quakers were the ones who freed all of the slaves that happened to be Africans from the homeowners and all those slaves that were 154 in number also established there homes in Westbury.
The next group of settlers that headed towards Westbury was Germans, who during the American Revolution took possession of livestock and houses. Even after the end of the war, they had no intention of returning back, hence Westbury became home to a third group of settlers.
Westbury attracted even more German, Italian, Polish and Irish farmers, after the Long Island Railroad was completed by 1840. This settlement of Irish, Italian and Polish people kept on rising from 1850s to 1900s, because during that time period various establishments were made to the village.
The village was incorporated in 1932, after its residents got enough petitions signed for third class incorporation. Since 1970s the village is also known as the Community of All Seasons because its residents live in the village for the whole year. The village is truly a unique and exciting place to live, as it is home to the people that are of various descents, races and origins.
Some of the major attractions of the Village include Village Square, Village of Westbury Sport Center and Village of Westbury Community center. Westbury is also home to Westburys Children Library that is being an efficient learning place for the children for past 75 years. Village of Westbury also holds several recreational parks that are perfect for all those looking to go out for a picnic or may be just to enjoy the beauty or nature.
Westburys Recreation and Community center, which is located at 348 Post Avenue holds several events such as table tennis, ballet instruction and bocce. Other than that, various after school programs are also offered at the recreational center.
The community center of Westbury is home to several activities like defensive driving course and Westbury PAL. The community center is also home to the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity Inc. and Senior Citizens of Westbury Center.
Some of the highlights of the upcoming community events in the village of Westbury include 3 concerts that are scheduled to be held Village Piazza. On July 17 it will be John Ganci, On July 31 it will be Oldies Concert and on August 14 it would be the turn for Christina Luna & Aaron Caruso to perform.
Apart from that Westbury also hosts a series of free concerts at Eisenhower Park. Noon concerts are held on 6 & 6a Wednesdays from Noon to 2 pm, while the series of evening concerts starts on June 22 and last till 30 August and are held at Harry Chapin Lakeside Theatre. Apart from these concerts, a wide variety of Hollywood blockbusters also hit the Harry Chapin Lakeside Theatre.
This years line-up for movies include, Bee Movie (July 3), To Catch A Thief (July 10), Shrek the Third (July 17), I am Legend (July 24), Grease (August 7), Spiderwick (August 14), Bourne Ultimatum (August 21) and The Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix (August 28).
Westbury is also home to one of the finest Cradle of Aviation Museum. Westbury has a long history is the field of aviation. A lot of aviation tests were conducted at Westbury and Long Island and in addition to that Westbury also has the history of sending the first man on the moon.
The Museum contains 70 imitations Long Islands air and space crafts. The Museum also provides a unique idea of having a dinner on mars in its cafe called Red Planet. And just to add a little more toppings to it, there is also an IMAX theatre that pleases all the senses of its viewers.
Another neighboring museum that is located right next to the Cradle of Aviation is the Childrens Museum. The Museum offers 12 different kinds of exhibitions that are fun not only for kids but for adults as well.
County Outdoor Pools also come with indoor pools and Cantiague Park Ice Skating Rinks. The County Outdoor pool also offers swimming lessons. Several Feasts and fairs are held at the Westbury throughout the year, and attract a large number of locals and tourists.
