West Des Moines
The City of West Des Moines is located across three counties namely Polk, Dallas and Warren in the state of Iowa. The early settlers of the West Des Moines were the Native American tribes of Sac and Fox.
Sacs also known as the Sauks were of Eastern Woodlands Culture group and the tribe was governed by the Clan system. And Fox who were also known as Meshkwahkihaki went into the alliance with the Sacs and made West Des Moines their homeland.
However on October 11, 1845, West Des Moines was deprived of both of these Native American tribes, as one of the local farmer named James Cunningham Jordan fired a shot at the middle of the night, which made both the tribes to say goodbye to West Des Moines.
The city was incorporated on October 9, 1893 with the name of Valley Junction and was known as the Railroad town. But due to the sound vision of its early leaders Junction Valley started to shape up into something that was more than just a Railroad town.
Early development after its incorporation included establishment of schools, colleges, sidewalks and street lights etc. Due this visionary development Junction Valley became one of the fastest growing cities of the state of Iowa and even today it still is. On January 1, 1938 the citys name was changed from Junction Valley to West Des Moines. By that time, city saw the establishment of several schools, colleges and churches on the part of its growth.
In 1905 the first City Hall was constructed, however the new City hall was constructed again in 1954. It was the vision of its early leaders that kept the city of West Des Moines on the path to its growth, and now what was once a dream, is turning into reality.
The City of West Des Moines is home to a wide number of recreational parks and open spaces thanks to its recreational division. The Main aim of the Recreational division is to maintain the total park space across the city and also provide guidance for the parks that are scheduled to be built in the future.
Recreational Parks in the city include Community Center, Valley View and Holiday Park Aquatic Centers, Raccoon River Park Softball Complex, and the Raccoon River Park Nature Lodge. Holiday Aquatic Center was recently opened on May 31.
The park also has the facility of organizing birthday parties. Valley View Aquatic center is another water park that is a three pool complex along with 4 water slides, a large pool with spray features and speed slide. The park also facilitates holiday rentals and birthday parties.
City of West Des Moines also has something to offer to the shopping fanatics. Some of the highlights of the retail establishments are located at Valley West Mall, Jordan Creek Town Center, Historic Valley Junction and West Glen Town Center. Another summer specialty of West Des Moines is its festivities. One of them is A-May-Zing days.
Like the name suggests the festival is held in the month of May and features several locals favorites like Music in Junction, The Spring Art Market, Valley Junction Farmers Market, Learnaplooza, Festivale Cinco de Mayo and the Principal Charity Golf Classic.
The A-May-Zing days is followed by the West Des Moines own Hy-Vee Triathlon that features athletes from around the globe to compete for the biggest prize money ever offered on an elite Triathlon circuit. This year triathlon was held on 22 June in which 75 men and 75 women from across the globe for the total purse of $700,000.
But this year it wasnt just about the money for American Athletes, as the winners were award with the spot on 2008s Olympics. And like the previous year, this year funds were raised again on Triathlon for Childrens Charity of Iowa.
This year West Des Moines was also home to The PGA champions Principal Charity Classic. It was held at Oaks Country Club from May 28 till June 1. The champions tour competition was held on Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
Apart from providing with a treat to the golfing fans, the competition also is a great source for raising funds for the community causes. Like last year, this year The Principal Charity Classic donated the money raised to charities like FORE our kids and several others.
These charities and fund raising plays a crucial role in keep the vitality of community.
