West Des Moines
The City of West Des Moines is located across three counties namely Polk, Dallas and Warren in the state of Iowa. The early settlers of the West Des Moines were the Native American tribes of Sac and Fox.
Sacs also known as the Sauks were of Eastern Woodlands Culture group and the tribe was governed by the Clan system. And Fox who were also known as Meshkwahkihaki went into the alliance with the Sacs and made West Des Moines their homeland.
However on October 11, 1845, West Des Moines was deprived of both of these Native American tribes, as one of the local farmer named James Cunningham Jordan fired a shot at the middle of the night, which made both the tribes to say goodbye to West Des Moines.
The city was incorporated on October 9, 1893 with the name of Valley Junction and was known as the Railroad town. But due to the sound vision of its early leaders Junction Valley started to shape up into something that was more than just a Railroad town.
Early development after its incorporation included establishment of schools, colleges, sidewalks and street lights etc. Due this visionary development Junction Valley became one of the fastest growing cities of the state of Iowa and even today it still is. On January 1, 1938 the citys name was changed from Junction Valley to West Des Moines. By that time, city saw the establishment of several schools, colleges and churches on the part of its growth.
In 1905 the first City Hall was constructed, however the new City hall was constructed again in 1954. It was the vision of its early leaders that kept the city of West Des Moines on the path to its growth, and now what was once a dream, is turning into reality.
