West Columbia

The beautiful city of West Columbia is located in the State of Carolina. The state was originally included in the Province of Carolina, which itself was included in the original Thirteen Colonies which revolted against the British Rule. The original name of the colony was Carolus which is the Latin variation of Charles. The state was named in the honor of King Charles the First. South Carolina is an all American state as it was one of the founding member states of the Confederate of States of America. It was also the first one to vote and be seceded from the Union. The total population of the city as per the census of 2000 was 13,064 whereas as per the estimates of 2008, it reached 13,914 with a growth rate of 6.5 %. 72.61 % of the total population is formed by non Hispanic Whites, whereas Blacks make up about 19.8 % of the total population and with that, the biggest minority. It is generally regarded as a conservative city with 44 % of the total population following the Southern Baptist Convention. Located in the heart of the State of Carolina, the city of West Columbia's climate is like another southern city of the State. Summers are hot and long. Average summer temperature in the hottest months of July and August is 83 F and be as hot as 94 F on a typical hot day, the rate of precipitation if highest during the months of June and July. Winters extend from November to March. Snowfall is not uncommon. An average of about 2 inches snow falls annually. Columbia Metropolitan Airport is located in the city and serves the whole of Columbia.

The city was originally chartered as a town in 1894 as Brookland. The town got its name due to the abundance of clear water brooks in the area. Later on, it was called the New Brookland as there was already a town with that name. The population of the city began to swell near the Congaree River. This concentration was known as 'the village' back then. The honor of having the first electrically operated textile mill. The town was struck by a fire in 1905 and was almost destroyed completely. The years to follow the fire were spent in reconstruction. Today the town has expanded to become the city of West Columbia with a rich history and a promising future.
