The city was originally chartered as a town in 1894 as Brookland. The town got its name due to the abundance of clear water brooks in the area. Later on, it was called the New Brookland as there was already a town with that name. The population of the city began to swell near the Congaree River. This concentration was known as 'the village' back then. The honor of having the first electrically operated textile mill. The town was struck by a fire in 1905 and was almost destroyed completely. The years to follow the fire were spent in reconstruction. Today the town has expanded to become the city of West Columbia with a rich history and a promising future.
