Washington

Washington is the North Western state of the United States of America. It is the 4th biggest city of the state. In 1889, the state of Washington was the 42nd addition to the Union. The state was named in the honor of the First President of the United States of America, George Washington and remains the only state to date which was named in the honor of an American president. More than half of the States' population lives in Seattle making it the ultimate hub of all its transport, arts, industry, business, and recreation as well as amusement. The rest of the land consists of some thick, lush green rain forests, small mountains, with scarcely any plains. The total land area of the State of Washington is 71,342 square miles. Out of which about 6.6 % is made up of water. It is located some 14,410 feet above sea level. The total population of the state is 6,549,224, more than half of which resides in the city of Seattle and the area around it. 88.68 % of the total population is made up of Whites. Asians make the biggest minority with 6.76 %. Christianity is the religion of about 66 % of the total population. Its location near the Pacific Ocean greatly influences it climate as it is said to be oceanic climate. The climate of the state can said to be mild with a little fog. Average summer temperature can reach up to 80 F, whereas in winters, the temperatures can be below freezing points. Continuous drizzle in winters is common. Snowfall isn't uncommon either. The system of state highways and airports, reaching the State is no problem. The floating bridges on the Lake Washington have solved all the hurdles in the way of reaching the State.

Before the arrival of European explorers, the state was the land ruled by the Native American tribes. The most popular feature of their culture is the colorful totem poles. The population of these Native Americans was struck by the evil small pox in 1770s, which is why, when the first Europeans came in 1775, there weren't many Native Americans left in the State. In the 1800s, United States of America together with the United Kingdom occupied the territory. The area came under complete US occupation when UK gave up on it in 1846. During this period, missionaries had already under taken the task of converting the local population to Christianity. The settling of missionaries in the area elicited mass migrations which further reduced the local Native American population. Later in 1889, Washington was incorporated as the Forty Second state of the US.

The most prominent feature of the Washington State culture is its Native American heritage. Several masterpieces of Indian arts dot the state.
