History
Waco is named after the Huaco Indians, the first inhabitants of this area. The city was founded in 1849. Waco gained popularity in 1870s after it became a major junction for the transport of cattle. The city now has a population of 110,000 residents with 220,000 of them in the greater Waco MSA area.

Education
Waco Independent School District serves most of the city of Waco. However, Midway ISD, Connally ISD, China Spring ISD, and La Vega ISD also serve parts of Waco. There are four main high schools in Waco city limits: Waco High School (Waco ISD), A.J. Moore Academy (Waco ISD), University High School (Waco ISD), and Midway High School (Midway ISD).

In addition to the public school systems in Waco, there are also many private and parochial schools in and around Waco, such as Vanguard College Preparatory School, Reicher Catholic High School, and Rapoport Academy. The city is home to three institutions of higher learning, including Baylor University, McLennan Community College and the Texas State Technical College.

Waco - a Center of Learning
Waco has gradually emerged into a huge center of learning. The major institution of learning is the Baylor University which was founded in 1845. The Baylor University is the oldest operating university in Texas. The Texas Christian University (TCU) has stood since 10 years and is also a prominent learning center.

Paul Quinn College, Texas is the oldest liberal arts college for African-Americans, which was originally founded in Austin in 1872 as the Connectional College. The school was named in honor of Bishop William Paul Quinn, longtime AME missionary. The college relocated to Dallas in the early '90's.

Another historic African-American college located in Waco was the Central Texas College, opened as the Central Texas Academy in about 1891. The school changed to a college in 1927. It closed between 1930 and 1932.

Texas Cotton Palace
Due to Waco"s location on the Brazos Valley, various plantation owners were drawn to the city from the South. Waco grew as the world"s leading producers of cotton.

Attractions
The Cameron Park is stretched on a 400 acre land and is considered as one of the largest city parks in the state of Texas. The park has 20 miles of hiking and mountain biking trails. A Golf course is also park of this Cameron Park. Grammy Nell's Play Area opened in 1998 with a focus on nature-based play and a zero-depth splash fountain. The Cameron Park zoo is home to three species of Lemurs including the Sclater's black lemur, a critically endangered species that is held in only 14 institutions worldwide.

Lion's Park
Lion"s Park is owned and operated by the Waco Lion"s Club. Recently celebrating its 50th anniversary, the park features Kiddie land, miniature golf, go-karts, paddle boats, a giant slide, and a train ride around the perimeter of the park.

Waco Water Park
The Waco Water Park is a favorite spot for kids of all ages. Two towering water slides and two pools provide a great escape from the summer heat. Right in the heart of Waco Riverbend Park, this new state-of-the-art water park is a complete water adventure.

You can indulge in two pools, water-shooting playscapes, a 22-foot slide, zero depth pool and more. The kids will love the many interactive toys, as well as the competition pool. Adults can enjoy water aerobics at the water park. Shade umbrellas, trees, and lounge areas provide a break from the water, while the main building is equipped with locker rooms, showers, restrooms and a concession stand.

Cottonwood Creek Golf Course
Cottonwood Creek Golf Course is a public facility located in Waco. The gold course is built on rolling plains and green landscape. Cottonwood Creek also offers a premier nine-hole junior course. The course, designed by Hurdzan-Fry, serves as an excellent place for kids to learn the game and for adults to practice their "short game." The holes range from 37 to 90 yards.

Conclusion
The Waco city became famous because of its location on the river. The fertile land near the river opened avenues for cotton owners. The historic Suspension Bridge is the centerpiece of present-day Waco and is surrounded by lovely city parks.
