Tickets for Viareggio

The giants wade out to sea. Stunningly creative caricatures of politicians & celebrities, vivid masks of shocking colors which bring to life hitherto unheard of creatures, & a dragon or two thrown in for good measure; the floats displayed at the Carnival of Viareggio make it a cultural explosion of colossal proportions. And to think that behind the majesty of these imposing figures lies simple papier-m?ch?...Indeed, such miracles are commonplace in this coastal town. Opening into the Tyrrhenian Sea on the Mediterranean coast of northern Tuscany, it is part of the Lucca province of Italy. Tuscany is famed for the artistic endeavor of its inhabitants & its rolling plains, & Viareggio brings to life the coast of this enchanting land.

The shelf of the coast is sandy on the Versilia coast. Located on the extensive coastal flooding plain, it forms a lip that slopes gradually downwards to meet the Ligurian Sea. 10 km of sandy beaches extend along the coast, most of which are privately-owned. Of the numerous canals running through the area, the Burlamacca is the most renowned because of its association with the mascot of the Carnival. Nearly 65,000 inhabitants enjoy the Mediterranean weather, which is strongly influenced by the southeasterly sea winds, Ponente & Libeccio. These ensure a remarkably narrow range of temperature, decreasing from a humid 19.2 oC in summer to a cool 11 oC in winter. Rainfall remains ample. Crawling along the French border, the A12 autostrada provides a route to Viareggio, while the A11 motorway is also used. Pisa's Galileo Galilei & Florence's Amerigo Vespucci airports are in close proximity, & the Genoa-Rome & Firenze train lines provide extensive railroad coverage. An extensive chain of Marinas litter the coastline, providing ample anchorage facilities.

The city's significance has spiraled fairly recently. 1169 saw the first watchtower erected in the area, & it got its name from the military building Turris de Via Regia. Development, however, did not take serious shape until the Pope removed the Montrone port from the control of Lucca, which thereby concentrated its efforts to convert the coastal town of Viareggio into its own commercial hub. The 19th century saw flourishing growth of the sailboat industry & beach resorts, but the interests of Lucca spawned a bitter animosity between the two cities which is evident even now. Evident, but not deep enough to dampen the Tuscan spirit. The Italian Riviera style resort is alive with its seafront promenade providing a perfect setting for the evening's traditional passeggiata walk through the streets. One can feel the pulse of the place while moving through the shops, cafes & seafood restaurants that line the route from beachfront to town. The Grand Hotel Principe di Piemonte & the Tirrenia Hotel afford brilliant seaviews & great service on the beachfront from their Art nouveau buildings. This distinct architectural style is also witnessed in other buildings such as the Villa Paolina, built for Napoleon's sister during her reign. Tourists can visit the Piazza Shelley, a square named after the English poet, while the emotional Monument of Peace & Resistance speaks volumes of Viareggio's endurance through WWII bombardment.

From humble beginnings as a protest parade in 1873, the colorful masks & papier-m?ch? floats have evolved to form not only the city's major trump card, but also Europe's grandest festival: Carnivale de Viareggio. Extending over five weeks, the elaborate parade of exotic floats along with masked balls, theatre & music stir up fascinating festivities. The Museo Citadella de Carnivale showcases postcards, masks & memorabilia. Tourists are just as entranced by the splendid open-air theatre that holds the summer opera festival, Puccini Festival. The summer's Citadella Jazz & More Festival celebrates the undying Tuscan love of music & melody, with memorable theatre & dance performances. Gaber Festival also pays homage to the brilliant composer, & features an impressive musical line-up. Literary excellence is acknowledged with the annual Premio literario Viareggio Repaci award. The various festivals highlight the Tuscan enthusiasm & respect for the arts. The rising star of Viareggio as a popular destination serves as testimony to the hospitality & general festive aura that prevails in every nook & cranny of the city. If one is unsure on buying a ticket to Viareggio, verily the swirling whirlwind of color & noise makes the decision for him.
