The 19th century saw flourishing growth of the sailboat industry & beach resorts, but the interests of Lucca spawned a bitter animosity between the two cities which is evident even now. Evident, but not deep enough to dampen the Tuscan spirit. The Italian Riviera style resort is alive with its seafront promenade providing a perfect setting for the evening's traditional passeggiata walk through the streets. One can feel the pulse of the place while moving through the shops, cafes & seafood restaurants that line the route from beachfront to town. The Grand Hotel Principe di Piemonte & the Tirrenia Hotel afford brilliant seaviews & great service on the beachfront from their Art nouveau buildings. This distinct architectural style is also witnessed in other buildings such as the Villa Paolina, built for Napoleon's sister during her reign. Tourists can visit the Piazza Shelley, a square named after the English poet, while the emotional Monument of Peace & Resistance speaks volumes of Viareggio's endurance through WWII bombardment.
