Thunder Bay
The City of Thunder Bay is hosted by the shore of Lake Superior in the northwestern part of Ontario, the capital city of Canada. This majestic city is 51.5 km from US/ Canada border with a distinct history, rich culture, well developed community, captivated elements of nature, modernized educational system, and abundant recreational activities for everyone.
History
Area where this city of Thunder Bay is situated remembers Paleo Indians as its earlier inhabitants. Miners by profession, they stamped their presence is this area as early as in 5000 BC. A new dawn was seen by this patch of land only when a contact was established with Europe in 17th century.
It was the time when Ojibway tribes were dominating the area in all spheres. Ojibway tribes practiced their authority on North shore of Lake Superior and Huron. They even managed to extend their grip from Georgian Bay to the Prairies.
In early 18th century, Canadian fur trade flourished. Fort William, a fort that was established on the shore of lake Superior in 1803, served as trade center for all the business activities of that area. Actual boost in economic center was witnessed with the completetion of first railway line by Canada Pacific Railway in the Town Square of Fort William in 1882.
In 1969 Fort William, Port Arthur and the adjacent geographical Townships of Neebing and McIntryre were named as the city of Thunder Bay. It was done through a provincial bill that was passed on May 8th, 1969. Mayor Saul Lasking was named as the first head of this newly created city.
Administration
City of Thunder Bay is governed by a mayor and twelve councilors; out of which the mayor and five of the councilors are elected at large by the whole city. Seven councilors are elected for the seven wards: Current River Ward, McKeller Ward, McIntyre Ward, Neebing Ward, Red River Ward, Northwood Ward and Westfort Ward.
Education
In Thunder Bay, there are 38 elementary schools, 3 middle schools, 8 secondary schools and 2 private schools, a medical school, two other colleges and a university. Lakehead University, Confederation College of Applied Arts and Sciences have increased educational status of the community.
Economy
Being the largest city in Northwestern Ontario, Thunder Bay happens to be the regional hub for commercial and administrative activities. Mostly the employers are in the public sector. Thunder Bay is also the center spot for Medical domain in the region.
The City of Thunder hosts Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre, the Lakehead District School Board and the Government of Ontario; each of which employ over 1,500 people.
Bowater Forest Products, Abitibi-Consolidated and Buchanan Forest Products are other main business entities in the city. Bombardier Transportation operates a plant in Thunder Bay which manufactures mass transit vehicles and equipment, employing approximately 800 people.
Rapidly increasing cost of electricity in Ontario has lessened the viability of primary industries in the vicinity, resulting in the laying off of workers at pulp and saw mills. The grain trade has seen downstream due to loss of grain transportation subsidies and the loss of European markets.
The gradual transition from shipping by train and boat to shipping by truck, and the free trade agreement with the United States have ended Thunder Bay's privileged position as a linchpin in Canadian east-west freight-handling trade. As a result the city has lost its traditional raison d'être as a break-bulk point, and the city is in economic decline.

The climate of Thunder Bay and surrounded area is influenced by Lake Superior that sits at city"s north end, which makes the city give a cooler summer and warmer feel in winter. The average daily temperatures range from a high of 17.6 °C in July and a low of -14.8 °C in January. The average daily high in July is 24.2 °C and the average daily high in January is -8.6 °C.
