According to the Census in 2005, the population of the city was estimated as 161,143 .The population density was 3,959.4 residents per square mile. Tempe is made up of primarily White non-Hispanic citizens (69.7%), followed by Hispanic (17.9%), Black (3.7%) and Native American (2.7%).

Climate
Tempe is generally a hot place. The average high temperature in summer can reach 105 degrees. Winters are very mild, seldom below 40 degrees. Very little rain takes place with an annual recorded precipitation of 9.4 inches. Only 0.32% of the 40-square mile area is covered by water.

Tempe is flat, except for the Tempe Buttes. Part of the Salt River that runs through northern Tempe has been built into a dam to create Tempe Town Lake. Residents have a whole range of outdoor activities that include rock climbing, biking, hiking and tubing down the Salt River.

Bus service in Tempe operates seven days a week. Most Tempe bus routes operate every 15 minutes from 6 a.m. to 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. to 6 p.m., Monday through Friday.

Tempe Town Lake This lake provides a huge area for walking and boating. Many concerts and a variety of festivals are held at Tempe Town Lake, which is located in downtown Tempe, not far from Arizona State University. At night, the bridges illuminate like in a fairyland, glowing with lights.

Kiwanis Park Recreation Center
It is a beautiful 54,000 square foot complex that is owned and operated by the City of Tempe. The facility is located in the scenic 125 acre City of Tempe Kiwanis Park and offers a wide variety of family oriented activities to the public.

The center boasts fifteen lighted tennis courts, full size multi-use gymnasium, and Ramada and picnic areas in a park. The center has an indoor heated pool which is used for both lap swimming and Wave Swimming.

ASU Gammage
This theatre was designed by the famous Frank Lloyd Wright. The theatre many hosts international talent, Broadway shows and local entertainment. Whether you prefer contemporary art, live music from up and coming bands, art festivals, Broadway shows at Gammage Theatre or performance art, Tempe has it all.

ASU Mars Space Flight Facility
The facility supports the Thermal Emission Spectrometer experiment that was sent aboard the Mars Global Surveyor spacecraft when it launched in November 1996. The Mars facility has a visitor area with displays about Mars and a television tuned to NASA TV.

This stadium was founded in 1968 and has gone expansion since then. The stadium overlooks the Gene Autry Field and the beautiful Marriott Buttes Resort. Not only is the complex one of the most striking facilities, it is one of the most accessible complexes in the Phoenix Metro area.

The complex is only a 10-minute drive to Sky Harbor International Airport, making it the ideal host for a variety of events, as well as the Spring Training home to Angels Baseball.

Festival of the Arts
There are massive twice yearly street fairs featuring arts and crafts from all over the country. These festivals hold carnival and street fairs with foods, beverages and live entertainment.

The Pyle Adult Recreation Center
It is a recreation facility for adults aged 18 and older. The center features a multi-purpose room with stage, instructional dance room, billiards room, card room, conference room and six meeting rooms.

A variety of activities and programs for seniors are held during the day. Classes and meetings are held throughout the day and evenings for all adults.

Shopping
There are numerous chains of super stores and related items all over the Tempe that give you a unique shopping experience. It takes all day to go through a variety of shopping malls. A lot of people just wander around and not recreate without even having to buy anything.
