Swindon started out as a small market town primarily for barter trade. The original market started at the hill top and know is referred as the Old Town area. The city gradually developed from a barter trade market to a strong industrial arm for England.

Both canals brought new trade into the local markets expanding horizons and opportunities. People from all vicinities started moving into the city to become a part of the industrial revolution.

Railway Works at Swindon
One of the major contributions that lead to the international claim to fame of this city was the railway projects that were implemented in Swindon. In 1840, the city was chosen by Isambard Bruenl to build the Great Western Railway. The primal reason behind choosing Swindon was its unique location.
London was east of the city and westwards was the city of Beth. And Swindon was also the proposed junction for the line to Gloucester at that given time. The dream for the city finally turned into reality in 1842. And from 1842 to 1895 all trains stopped for alt least a few minutes to change locomotives. Swindon was the first European railway stations that introduced refreshment rooms.
Due the influx of high traffic at the railway station, close by homes were constructed for the workers and recreational activities soon took place. Swindon Railway Station has changed completely and the ambiance of the years can be seen and felt at the Steam Railway museum.
The Steam Railway Museum is dedicated to the years spent in building the station as well as the years dedicated to driving it successfully. Different artifacts are kept in the museum for new generations to truly understand the importance of Swindon to the railway system.
