      Stillwater
      Stillwater is located in Payne County, in north central Oklahoma. Stillwater was incorporated as a city in 1899. The city is named after the slow-flowing Stillwater Creek present in this city.

      This city is famous for being the research and development center for automated engineering and laser and telecommunications equipment. Marine engines, business forms, wire, and hoses are also manufactured.

      The Stillwater city is also home to the renowned Oklahoma State University. According to the census in 2004, the population of the city was estimated as 40,731.

      The Experience of Stillwater
      Transport Stillwater is a small city and its organised transportation systems make it very easy to go around the city. The Oklahoma State University started a small bus transity system. With time this system has expanded and serves the entire city of Stillwater. The buses take tourists and locals to famous recreational places such as Boomer Lake.

      This bus system has gained popularity for being an efficently run transit system. Besides this, the city is fairly pedestrian-friendly in the downtown district. Incase, you dont have any personal transportation, it is easy to move around the city with the combination of bus system and walking.

      Demographics
      As of the census of 2000, there were 39,065 people, 15,604 households, and 7,318 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,402.7 people per square mile. There were 16,827 housing units at an average density of 604.2/sq mi.

      The racial makeup of the city was 82.48% White, 4.30% African American, 3.89% Native American, 5.05% Asian, 0.04% Pacific Islander, and 0.88% from other races There were 15,604 households out of which 20.8% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 36.1% were married couples living together, 7.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 53.1% were non-families. 34.6% of all households were made up of individuals and 6.9% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older.

      The average household size was 2.13 and the average family size was 2.81. In the city the population was spread out with 15.2% under the age of 18, 38.2% from 18 to 24, 24.4% from 25 to 44, 13.6% from 45 to 64, and 8.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 24 years. For every 100 females there were 102.7 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 102.4 males.

      The median income for a household in the city was $25,432, and the median income for a family was $41,938. Males had a median income of $31,623 versus $22,312 for females. The per capita income for the city was $15,789. About 12.6% of families and 27.3% of the population were below the poverty line, including 18.2% of those under age 18 and 8.9% of those aged 65 or over.

      Economy & Culture
      Oklahoma State University is the largest cultural center of the town. Several malls and shopping centers have opened in the past few years. The Stillwater downtown has undergone renovation. A lot of national chains have opened up replacing locally owned businesses. These new avenues catch huge crowds as the population of the city expands.

      The economy of Stillwater has seen a large boon because of the Oklahoma State University and because of the influx of population into the city. Large crowds come to restaurants, cafes and bars on weekends. The city hosts football games, resulting in large number of people coming to Stillwater from nearby cities. Strict discipline is maintained within the college premises and in other parts of the city prohibiting loud drunken parties. The city police enforce law and order within the city. Stillwater city regulatory body prohibits the consumption of alcohol in public, including the front of a property and the sidewalks.

      Outdoor Attractions
      The city provides plenty of outdoor recreational spots. The most popular of these is the Boomer Lake.

      Boomer Lake
      This lake is especially famous among tourists for its picnic areas, golf courses and lakes. The lake has various hiking trails and provides many recreational opportunities.

      Lake McMurtry
      This is also a major lake in Stillwater and is situated in 10 minutes Northwest of Stillwater. This lake provides various mountain biking trails and is known for its scenic beauty.

      Lake Carl Blackwell
      This lake resides West of Stillwater and provides facilities for camping, boating and fishing. Trails are available for horses.

      Home to Red Dirt
      This is a famous hangout for country music. The popular bands Jason Boland & The Stragglers and The Great Divide were formed in Stillwater.

      Hoyt Park
      This park has green belts and is known for its baseball grounds. The park has walking trails.

      Town & Gown Theatre
      This is a famous Stillwaters Regional community theatre and was formed in 1950. The Town & Gown theatre is known for producing many award winning theatres. The first play was produced in 1950 in the Oklahoma State University Student Union Ballroom. Each season the theatre produces an award winning drama and comedy. Over the years Town & Gown's association with Oklahoma State University has remained a part of theater. They have hosted many student directors and actors.

      Oklahoma State University (OSU)
      Stillwater houses the popular Oklahoma State University. Over 21,000 students enrolled in this university in 2002. Students come from all over the world to study here and acquire degrees in multiple disciplines.

      Eskimo Joe's
      This is a popular hangout for younger crowd. The Eskimo Joes T-Shirt restaurant built on Elm Street near the OSU campus. People like to wear Eskimo Joes T-Shirts and they are the second most collected t-shirt in the world. The first being the Hard Rock Cafe T-Shirt.

      Nearby Cities
      The Oklahoma City is near the Stillwater city. It takes only one hour to reach and the Stillwater residents come to the Oklahoma city on weekends.

      Another major city Tulsa is also close to Stillwater and lies on the Northeast of the city. The Stillwater residents have an option to visit these lively cities for recreation during weekends.
