Details of Selma and the Ticket Luck value
Selma
Selma, Texas is one of the many smaller towns of the largest state in the United States of America. The town first began its root to civilization in 1847 incorporating itself as an official locality of Texas. Like many of the towns and cities of Texas, the people that settled in had to start from the stark realities of complete objectivity.
Basic infrastructure of roads, railways, pavements was not even a part of the little town upon its birth. The city had to be built brick by brick. Selma was built by the heavy influx of immigrants from different regions. The original settlers of the city were from German and Polish origins that took forth the opportunity of building the city from scratch.
The immigrants as well as the locals from near by towns and areas started building stores, grocery bazaars, and schools. The primary source of income was cotton grinning, ore manufacturing, hair saloon and horse stable and blacksmith skill sets. Very similar to all start up cities in America, the city of Selma also had the basic human minds and tools to create and build on city infrastructure.
Doctors, teachers, merchants, barbers and even blacksmiths were all available in town. The city of Selma even up till now remains a very small town with families that have been living in the city or the outskirts for years at end. It is a family town and enjoys the benefits of small rural areas.
The primal advantage of towns in the late 1800"s required means and modes of communication. Modes of communication were either railway infrastructure of post offices. Since Texas is a larger area to cover and requires more resources to build the railways and the postal offices, the railway infrastructure was built after 2 years of its inception in Selma, Texas.
Harrison and Brown Stagecoach Stop was built and gave passengers a mechanism to visit the city and opened the gateway for freight and other material import and export. The stagecoach was the talk of the town and employed a relatively large amount of the locals. The coach allowed Selma a mechanism to open to the outside world.
The growth of the city has not been exponential or even close to the growth rate of different cities of Texas. Selma has been a very small town in regards to population and financial growth. There has been no substantial growth in terms of industrial units or manufacturing plants that could have kick started a major revolution of expansion and financial prosperity.
Rather, the city has seen some significant declines in regards to population over the course of the last decade. One of the major reasons behind the decline in population has been the non availability of jobs in town. Students who graduate have to look else where for a reputed college and career paths in specialized fields.
In 1940, the population of the town was only 100. And this is too after a good hundred years of civilization in this part of town. In 200, the population grew to a good 800 people that belonged to 286 distinct households and 217 families. 217 families have been building and renovating the city of Selma for the last 100 years. Many of these families belong to the German and Polish immigrants that settled in the city in the mid 1800"s.
The population as well as the ethnicity statistics has also changed for Selma over the last decade. According to a 2000 concensus, the racial makeup of the city was 86.55% White, 4.57% African American, 1.14% Native American, 1.27% Asian, 0.38% Pacific Islander, 3.93% from other races, and 2.16% from two or more races.
Hispanic or Latino origins comprised of 30.46% of the population. Surprisingly enough the town that originally had Polish and German immigrants had now changed into a Hispanic community where 1/3rd of the population speaks Spanish.
This particular trend in Selma is consistent with the overall customer demographic changes of and in Texas. One of the primal reasons for Spanish being a largely increasing second language is the overall large immigrant population from Mexico.
The survey also concluded that out of 286 households, 33.9% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 67.1% were married couples living together, 5.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 24.1% were non-families. 17.8% of all households were made up of individuals and 4.9% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older.
The average household size was 2.73 and the average family size was 3.17. Selma during the year 2000 had a full force of teenage blood as compared to other age groups in the locality. Approximately 25.4% under the age of 18, 8.1% from 18 to 24, 24.9% from 25 to 44, 31.5% from 45 to 64, and 10.2% who were 65 years of age or older.
The median age was 40 years. For every 100 females there were 107.9 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 104.9 males. The male population had better statistics of going out and meeting respective females.
Selma for all its intent and purposes will always be home to the 200 odd families that have built the city and enjoy being a part of the local heritage of an old and revered town of Texas.
