History
Saratoga Springs was established as a town in 1819 from a western portion of the Town of Saratoga. Its main community was incorporated as a village in 1826 and the entire region became a city in 1915. In the 19th Century, the community became famous as a spa and many hotels were built, including the colossal Grand Union Hotel that was in its day, the largest hotel in the world.

Geography
According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 29.1 square miles, of which, 28.4 square miles of it is land and 0.6 square miles of it (2.17%) is town. The famous Saratoga Lake is located in southeast of the city.

Skidmore College is a famous private, coeducational institution in Saratoga Springs. The school was founded in 1903. The college offers bachelors and masters degrees in a wide range of fields. It offers courses of study in the liberal arts, the arts and sciences, the fine arts, business administration and management, computer sciences, education, and physical education. Students from all around the world come to study in this college.

One of the main summer attractions at Saratoga Springs is horse racing. The Saratoga Race Course, completed in 1864, is the country's oldest thoroughbred racetrack still in use. Each year, people flock to the city during the season to see the ponies. With so many tourist coming to the city, all hotels fill to the capacity and many Saratogians rent out their homes. The premier race is called Travers. The Saratoga Gaming and Raceway, another popular racetrack includes a video gaming facility, the Racino.

The Saratoga Lake is located southeast of Saratoga Springs and known for its breathtaking scenic beauty. The lake has a public boat service and several other private marinas. People commonly engage in activities such as bass fishing, sailing, boating, waterskiing and ice fishing.

Hot air balloons take you on a thousand feet high flight. You can enjoy the gorgeous view of the Adirondack Region and the Green Mountains of Vermont from high in the sky. This is a lifetime experience for a lot of people.

The Springs
In the early days, people visited Saratoga for the Springs. The Springs give a unique history to the Saratoga town. The natural mineral Springs were believed to have healing powers and people would come from all over to drink or bathe in the waters. The idea of Springs was commercialized with the opening of bath houses. The Lincoln Baths was one such place where people went to be treated with waters. This bath house exists till this day and people visit for spa treatments. Many other bath houses were opened offering spa treatments. You can find Springs all over the town. Many of the Springs are famous for their distinct taste. Some taste of regular water and some taste of a certain mineral such as sulfur. People bottle the spring water to take back home.

The famous Disney's Saratoga Springs Resort & Spa at the Walt Disney World Resort was inspired by the city of Saratoga Springs, New York. The spa offers a wide selection of professional spa treatments and packages. The spa features relaxing mineral pools and private treatment rooms for spa guests. The Spa compliments the resort's theme of the rejuvenating "Saratoga Springs" where guests come to relax in a healthy environment of mineral waters, recreation, and sunny weather.

There are around 34 fiberglass horses on display in downtown Saratoga. The most popular among them is Superhorse. The Saratoga Performing Arts Center is built in a covered arena located on the grounds of the Saratoga Spa State Park. The famous Philadelphia Orchestra and the New York City Ballet are held here. This center is famous for holding jazz festivals for several decades.

Each summer, popular bands come to this stage and perform. People buy tickets to attend these concerts. On the State Park grounds, the Spa Little Theatre hosts many festivals each year during the summers. The most popular of them are the chamber music festival and the Lake George Opera Festival. There are several museums in the area, including the National Museum of Dance and Hall of Fame, and the National Museum of Racing and Hall of Fame. There are more than 20 golf courses.

Beekman Street has become an art district, housing four art galleries, and restaurants. Artists live and work under one roof and arrange various social events. Yaddo is an artist's community built on a 400 acre land. Yaddo has been home to many Prize winning authors and one Noble Prize winner. An interesting research revealed that potato chips were for the first time invented in Saratoga Springs by a Native American chef.
