Salem is the capital of the U.S state of Oregon. The Salem city is located in the center of the Willamette Valley. The city is also the county seat of Marion County. Salem was established in the early 1800s as a farming community.

History

The Salem city has characteristics of the Mediterranean climate. The city has heavy rainfall during late fall and throughout winter. The climate is foggy with grey skies during the long rainy season. Light snowfall occurs in winter.

Economy
Salem serves as a center for the nearby farming communities. Gradually, it has become a major agricultural food processing axis. The city also boasts a number of computer-related manufacturing plants. The largest private employer in Salem is the Salem Hospital with over 2,700 employees.

Salem has had an abundance of waterways since its origin. The most prominent names are the Mill Creek, the Mill Race, Pringle Creek, and Shelton Ditch. In the eastern part of Salem, streams such as Clark Creek, Jory Creek, Battle Creek, Croisan Creek, and Claggett Creek pass, while Glen Creek and Brush Creek flow through West Salem.
