The Mansfield Drive-in, which is a movie theatre, is recent but rare. The adjacent miller's house is the birthplace of former CT governor Wilbur Cross, which covers an area of more than 1000 acres and comprises 85 buildings. The Mansfield Training School was operated by the Connecticut Department of Mental Retardation until its closure after legal challenges, in the 1990s.
Since then, the site deteriorated. However, recently the University of Connecticut has been finding use for the buildings and fixing them up. The school has an eerie outlook, and with its overturned wheelchairs and neo-classical hospital, is an attraction for adventurous locals, the police, and amateur photographers.
Located directly across from the Mansfield Training School is the Donald T. Bergin Correctional Institution. It serves as a pre-release centre for inmates. It houses approximately 1000 inmates.
In Mansfield, there is also a behavioural health centre, the Natchaug Hospital. It provides a full range of in-patient psychiatric and substance-abuse treatment.
