Lorain is a city found in the Lorain County, northern Ohio, US. It is situated on Lake Erie at the mouth of the Black River. It is a part of the Cleveland?Elyria?Mentor metropolitan area, and the total area comprised by Lorain is 62.8 sq km. The total number of inhabitants in the city is about 70,592 according to the 2000 census. Therefore, it is said to be the 10th largest in Ohio, in terms of population.
The area, which is today known as Lorain, got settled in 1807 initially, named Canesadooharie, and a trading post was established here. However, in 1836 the name of the settlement was altered to Charlestown, and in 1874 it incorporated as a city and the present name ? Lorain, was adopted to honor the historic province of Lorraine, in France. On the arrival of a railroad in 1872, the economic development in the area boosted, and later in 1894, the steel production started here. One of these steel mills can still be seen in the city, and are known as the United States Steel Mills. More recently, a few portions of these mills have been acquired Republic Steel. In fact, the existence of the various steel producers in the city has been so strong that Lorain is often referred to as the Steel City. Today, Lorain acts as a major Lakeport and a manufacturing center, where thousands of local residents are still being employed by the steel mills. The Lorain Works is one of the few integrated steel mills left in the United States. The year 1924 brought bad news for the City of Lorain, as it got hit by a devastating tornado which literally tore the city apart, damaging many of its historical buildings.
The City of Lorain can be said to be very culturally rich as there are more than seventy diverse nationalities live in the area, many of which got settled in the area due to being attracted by the by work in the steel mills and ship yards. Many historic buildings that initially got destroyed by the tornado were rebuilt and can still be witnessed in the city even today. One of these significant structures that continue to operate till date includes the Lorain Palace Theatre of 1928. The theatre is also home to a community theater group. On the other hand, when it comes to celebrations and festivals, the most important and renowned one is the Lorain International Festival, which occurs each summer, on an annual basis.
