With population of above 7,000 as calculated in the 2000, it came into being as a result of unification of the cities of Oceanlake, Taft and Delake as well as other communities of Nelscott and Cutler City. The name of the city evolved through a contest which was conducted amongst the local school children. The objective of holding this contest arose as it was decided that it was not feasible to use one of the five communities' names.

Lincoln City OR was formed in 1930, which was the year Cutler City post office was terminated. Similarly, Delake was named since it lay near Devils Lake. Its name resulted due to the way local Finnish people pronounced the name of the lake.
