The town of Diez is situated beside Limburg but comprises of partial functions of an upper center in Western Middle Hesse. Both the towns of Elz and Diez run closely together that fall in Limburg's neighborhood. It is not clear how the name Limburg which is short for Limburg an del Lahn came about but it could very well be attributed to a castle built here. The town was named as Lintpurc in 910.

The first castle buildings in Limburg an del Lahn were developed in 800. These castles were constructed for protection of the town and they served their purpose well. The trade of lively goods was carried out with the town immensely profiting from it. The city was continuously being developed and a wooden bridge was laid down across the region in 1150. Limburg also had strategic location importance as a long-distance road went from Cologne to Frankfurt am Main through Limburg. Limburg Castle retained its original form in the early 13th century. Some changes took place when the Lords of Ysenburg acquired its ownership. The community received its town rights in 1214.
