Kassel is a town located in the German state of Hesse and is part of one of the urban districts of Germany. It is is over forty square miles in size and stands at a height of over five hundred feet with a population of around two hundred thousand people. It is part of a metropolitan area that is home to roughly half a million people and located next to the Fulda River. Its name is inspired from the castle of the Chatti tribe of German people, Castellum Cattorum that lived in the area during the age of the Romans. History of Kassel reveals that by 1189, it had the rights of a city. During the sixteenth century, it was a center of protestants and a stronghold for them. In 1685, it played host to over seventeen hundred Huguenots as one of the earliest form of humanitarian acts in Germany. During the eighteenth century, Kassel became famous for its mercenaries who were deployed all over the Europe. In the nineteenth century, it was the home of the famous Brothers Grimm who collected and wrote some of the best known fairytales today. It became a principality during this time and its ruler became a Prince-elector. It soon became the capital of the Kingdom of Westphalia after it was annexed by Napoleon and was ruled by his brother, Jerome. Near the end of the nineteenth century, it turned into a huge industrial center and with a major railway junction, becoming one of the most visited places in Germany. As one of the main centers of the two world wars, Kassel undoubtedly gained fame and was also bombed several times.
In terms of culture, Kassel has been famous for hundreds of years. It was the site of the first ever German observatory and a famous German theater, the Ottoneum which was the first permanent theatre in Germany. It has today been turned into the Natural History Museum with the theatre now known as the Staatstheater Kassel and located near the museum. This theater is the site of many spectacular plays, drama and other works of the performing arts, drawing many to live performances via Kassel tickets.
This city is also the site of one of Germany’s oldest international exhibitions, an exhibition of modern and contemporary art that has been held since 1955 and known as the Documenta. It is an event that attracts numerous art lovers from all over the world and usually occurs every five years with the nearest event taking place in 2012. After the sixth edition of Documenta, Kassel became the first ever town in the entire world to have been light up at night by laser beams as a result of works by Horst H. Baumann known as Laserscape. Even today, this laser installation is visible for any visitor during the weekend and so are many other works of art. Indeed, many come to visit the city solely due to its repute in the world of art and entertainment.
