The main city and the county seat of the Metropolitan Statistical Area, Jackson city resides in the US state of Michigan. It houses numerous structures that date way back than the American Civil War. It is home to the First Baptist Church that was established in the early nineteenth century and was renovated and renamed to Romanesque Revival in the late nineteenth century. It has also been home to the First Congregational Church since the mid nineteenth century. This church has been instrumental in the antislavery movements and the temperance and civil rights movements organized in the mid of the nineteenth century. It also houses the St. Paul's Episcopal Church that dates back to 1840. This church was replaced by a Romanesque Revival structure in 1853. St. John's the Evangelist Church also resides here. Originally built for the Irish population, this structure now serves a vast majority of people from different backgrounds. It is the oldest Roman Catholic Church in the city. The second Catholic Church of the city, St. Mary Star of the Sea, was established in 1881. It was renovated into a Romanesque Building in the early 20th century and is all set with marble alters and stained glass windows. The Temple Beth Israel, a revolutionary synagogue built by the Germans, is also situated here.
As is indicated by the structures, the city has a rich past. It was first organized as a town in 1829 by Horace Blackman. Blackman had hired Alexander Laverty (a land surveyor) to guide him west ahead of Ann Arbor. They crossed the Grand River and camped for the night at the place today known as Trail and S. Jackson Street. Blackman registered 160 acres of land ahead of Monroe and returned later that year along with his brother Russell and built a cabin on it at the place which is today known as Ingham and Trail streets. The city was originally named Jacksonopolis which was then changed to Jacksonburgh. It was finally christened Jackson in 1838. The city is the source of origin of the famous Republican Party. It was where the first slate of members was chosen for the elections in the party's first official meeting. The hot and humid conditions necessitated that the rendezvous be altered. The place chosen was an oak wood on the town frontier at Morgan's Forty. The place today is a corner of the Second and Franklin Streets and is popular among the masses as Under the Oaks.
Economy flourishes in this city. It is home to numerous industrial units such as CMS Energy supplying natural gas and electricity; Allegiance Health; Eaton Corporation; and Michigan Automotive Compressor, Inc. Jackson city also accommodated the world's best security prison until 2007 when it closed down. The prison was called Southern Michigan Prison. Jackson, Michigan is the city of motor sport. Every year it features two Busch series Stock car races, Craftsman Truck series race and a Sprint Cup. It has its own motor speedway- the Springport Motor Speedway that accommodates some 7500 spectators. U. E. Patrick, Indy 500 car owner, lived in Jackson along with the owner of the NASCAR team owner, Henry Melling. In the late 20th century, the Car Auto Racing Teams (CART) necessitated the development of racing teams and consequently Patrick Racing was formulated. This team was a success and it went on to win two Indianapolis 500 championships and three CART PPG championships. The team however disintegrated in 1991 only to reunite some three years later. The reunited team won the Michigan 500 championship in the year 1995. Another team, the Melling Racing team, was formulated in 1982. The Melling Racing Team won the NASCAR Winston Cup series in 1988.
Community Racing Championships are also organized at the city. Community Racing Challenge is a series of events that are organized every Saturday commencing from April and going on in to September. The city is easily accessible via all forms of transportation. It was once a railway core and was hence known as the Crossroads of Michigan. It is served by the national railway carriers Amtrak. It is also served by the Reynolds Field which is now used as a general aviation facility. It is also served by the Interstate Highway 94, US Route 127, Motorway 50, 60 and 106.
