Tickets for Jackson TN

You can plan your history trip to this city since it was involved in the American Civil War. Even the name is historic- originally christened Alexandria, the name underwent change to honor the then General Andrew Jackson who later became the seventh President of the United sates of America. First establishments date as far back as the early nineteenth century at the Forked Deer River. The city was properly established when it was decided that land be deeded to the commissioners- Sterling Brewers and James Fentress. The places under consideration were Golden's Station, Alexandria and Jackson. The General Assembly in 1821 passed a resolution granting the City of Jackson to the commissioners. Since most of the settlements were near Jackson so the city was thought to be apt for the establishment of a seat of legislature. It was also chosen as the city for the Supreme Court since it was the only significant city at the time in the vicinity.

Jackson city, Tennessee was a place of happening in the American Civil War. Brigadier General Nathan Bedford Forrest wanted to cut off the railway tracks running through Jackson city since they were the source of all supplies to the Union Forces. Consequently, Forrest sent an expedition to fight Ulysses S. Grant's army. Grant ordered a military concentration at Jackson and sent an expedition to meet Forrest's expedition headed by Brigadier General Jeremiah C. Sullivan. The two armies met at Lexington and Forrest's army came out victorious. As Forrest's army advanced, Jeremiah sent a small force lead by Adolph Englemann to bank northeast of Jackson city. Englemann's army met a Confederate army at Old Salem, won, and advanced towards town. This however was only a diversion by Forrest who in the meanwhile destroyed the railway tracks running through Jackson city and then retreated and headed towards Trenton and Humboldt.

Before 1989, the city had a commissioner form of government. However later, on the basis that this diluted the voting powers of the African American, the form of government was changed to the district government mode. A number of tornadoes hit the city in the nine year period extending from the year 1999. Most of the downtown was wiped clean by the F4 tornado. The Union University Campus withstood severe destruction in 2002 at the hands of another tornado. Another tornado hit the regional airport and claimed eight lives. A tornado in 199 damaged the Riverside Cemetery where a number of the Confederate Forces Soldiers graves reside. The city is easily accessible through all forms of transport. It is served by Interstate Highway 40, US Route 45, 70 and 412. It is also served by the McKellar-Sipes Regional Airport. For all the mechanics freaks, the Casey Jones Home and Railroad Museum is a must see.

The museum houses several restored ancient locomotives including a steam locomotive for exhibit as well Casey Jones Lodging. Being a sports city, it is home to the West Tenn Diamond Jaxx- the Seattle Mariners affiliates and also served as gracious hosts to the NAIA Women's Division I National Championship basketball tournament. It is also the place where the Hub City Hurricanes played in 2007. The city also houses the baseball and softball arena West Tennessee Healthcare Sportsplex. This has served as an accelerator for the city's development. The city has also seen the birth and upbringing of various renowned artists from various disciples. It is the birthplace of Casey Jones- an engineer, a hero who died while saving the lives of his fellow workers in a freight train. It is also the native city of Tennessee's only automaker, Marathon Motor Works.

The city loves its music. It has given birth to various musicians such as the pianist Joe Hunter who played with the Funk Brothers; vocalists Luther Ingram and Carl Perkins; football players Trey Teague, Ed Jones and Al Wilson; and actor Christopher Jones who starred in the TV series The Legend of Jesse James. It was also the home of the investor M.D. Anderson after whom the Cancer Centre in Texas is named since he granted a huge donation to the center. The Tigrett Toy Factory, owned by John B. Tigrett, is located at Jackson, Tennessee. His son Isaac Burton Tigrett was the one responsible for the establishment of the Hard Rock Cafe chain of restaurants across the country.
