Hoyerswerda is a city situated in Saxony, SE Germany, located in a lignite-mining area, in the Lusatia region. It lies in the Sorbian settlement area. The city lies 34 km north east of Cottbus and 54 km from Dresden, and is s one of the six centers of the Free State of Saxony, along with being a member of the group that helps international trade and cooperation in the area, called Euroregion Neisse. It once had a population of 75,000, whereas, today it comprises of about 41,458 inhabitants.
Initially being mentioned in 1268, the City of Hoyerswerda was established as an official marketplace in 1371. It obtained the right to elect its own council, and also the municipal rights from Freiherr von Duba during 1423. Then, by 1815, Hoyerswerda became a part of the Prussian Province of Silesia. On the arrival of the railway in the city, which linked Hoyerswerda to Ruhland, a positive effect on the economic development of the city was suddenly felt. In 1912, when the organization of the Sorbs, called Domowina, was found, the town became part of the Prussian Province of Lower Silesia. Hoyerswerda got declared as a core center of German defense, after the WWII, hence, it got seriously damaged. The invading Red Army burnt the town down to ashes, and it again became part of Saxony after the war, from 1952 until 1990, when the states of East Germany were abolished.

Schwarze Pumpe, the lignite processing enterprise, got established in 1955, and by 1957, the demand for new living space rose dramatically. The following years experienced heavy contruction and building in the area, and ten new and huge living areas with numerous apartments were built. In 1990, when the German reunification took place, Hoyerswerda became part of the reconstituted state of Saxony, and experienced a significant population drop.
