The main reason for these tribes to get settled here was to enjoy the healing properties of the thermal springs. The area was then explored by Father Marquette and Jolliet in 1673, and was claimed for France. The land was given up to Spain in 1763 due to a treaty, called the Treaty of Paris 1763. Later, the control over the land was returned to France, and then the Louisiana Purchase took place in 1803. A year later, the springs got toured by Dr. George Hunter and William Dunbar, who found a lone log cabin, along with finding a few undeveloped shelters being used by people who visited the springs for their healing properties.
The land was then occupied by another American Native tribe ? Quapaw Indians, who later had to give it up to the United States of America in a treaty. In 1819, the Arkansas became its own territory and the Arkansas Territorial Legislature appealed, a year later, to keep the springs and adjoining mountains reserved as a federal reservation. The US Congress, in 1832, created the Hot Springs Reservation and granted centralized protection of the thermal waters. The Reservation, in 1921, got renamed as the Hot Springs National Park.
The name of the city is derived from the natural thermal water, which is flowing from 47 springs on the western slope of Hot Springs Mountain, part of the Ouachita Mountain range. The springs and the mountains in the park have been managed by following the same philosophy conservation:
Springs - to preserve the production of uncontaminated hot water for public use;
Mountains ? to preserve the hydrological system that feeds the springs.
Thousands of people have used the hot spring water in therapeutic baths for more than two hundred years to treat ailments such as rheumatism and others. The area has developed into a renowned resort, and is often known as The American Spa, which attracted countless, both rich and poor, health seekers from around the world.
