The state of New Jersey boasts the city of Hoboken that has attractions that will not let you alone. The city's population was just under 39,000 as estimated in the 2000 survey. The city falls in the New York metropolitan area. It includes Hoboken Terminal which acts as the chief transportation hub for the area. Hoboken makes its way as being the venue where the first US recorded baseball game was held. In the 17th century, Hoboken was a part of New Netherland colony. Later on, in the early 19th century, it was developed as a resort by a military person and then nourished on the grounds as a residential area. Finally, in 1855 it was integrated as a city. Hoboken's harbor was an essential region for the New York's shipping industry and has been the center for key industries for the greater part of 20th century. Hoboken was initially an island with a river encompassing it and small islands on the west side. The city is located on the west side of the Hudson River.
Thirty-five percent of its land is water and it has below 50 streets laid out in symmetry which have been named after US presidents. The name of Hoboken was settled by a colonels upon purchasing the land. The region has also been labeled as ?the land of the tobacco pipe? owing to the presence of a certain stone used to prepare tobacco pipes. The first settlers that came here were from New Netherlands. The city is known locally as ?Mile Square City?, but its covered area is in fact two square miles. The predominant culture here in the late 19th century/20th century was German. Hoboken hosts the Sevens Institute of Technology, which is listed as one of the oldest technological universities in the US.
Hoboken has its name as the home ground of the first officially recorded baseball game in American history. The game was played at Elysian Fields in the year 1846. It was decided to keep baseball as the game of the city compared to cricket. A match with an awesome number of spectators was played in 1865 further catapulted the status of Baseball as the American National Game. Two noteworthy baseballs being built with fences around further paved the way for promoting the game. Hoboken has some significant landmark attractions. One of them is Castle Gatehouse at Stevens Institute of Technology.
This has the most elevated point in the city. It came under Stevens Institute of Technology in 1910 becoming an administrative unit till the late 1950's. The building also comprises adjacent areas like the yellow brick Castle Point Terrace. Clam Broth House that opened in 1899 was a landmark building which was declared dangerous and brought down in 2004. The building had two colossal hand-shaped signs on the outside with a third smaller sign. The cracks in the building made it obligatory for the management to bring it down.Another landmark wonder in Hoboken is the Hoboken Historical Museum that was set up in 1986 moving to its present location at Hudson street.
It provides an overview of the city's history apart from adding aesthetic value of the local artists' work. Maxwell's is yet another place which is basically a venue for the performances of some great music bands. The venue has fallen short only for some period in the 1990s, but otherwise it has been sizzling with music activity of the music gurus. Hudson Tea Building Walkway is a public park in Hoboken that was opened in 2004. The building presents views of Manhattan and also of north harbor. The area is decorated with flowers and provides view to Washington Street. Castle Point Park is a public park that brings you classic views of Manhattan. Castle Point Park continues further along the Castle Point. A historic cave is also visible from the park.
The park also has Castle Point Skate Park inside it, which is the assigned skateboarding place for the city. Another attraction is the Sinatra Park that was constructed in 1998. The park basically pays tribute to Frank Sinatra who was born in this city. The park has a soccer field and caf?. In year 2004, CNN people came to this park to cover live shows of ?Inside Politics? and Crossfire. Next in line is Hoboken Island that is a memorial for the September 11, 2001 victims.
