Found in the state of Baden-Wuerttemberg (BW), Heilbronn is a mid-sized town/city, in the southwestern Germany. It is the seat of Heilbronn County and is the state's sixth largest city. Lying along the Neckar River, halfway between Heidelberg and Stuttgart, and surrounded by the Swabian Forest, as well as vineyards, Heilbronn is placed in a fertile region, which grows fruits, vegetables, and grapes. The latest population estimate of the city is 121,384, and it comprises a total land area of 99.88 sq. km.
Heilbronn, BW, was first mentioned in 741, and it was the home of the Carolingian princes' palace. It was built on the site of an old Roman settlement. In 1281, the town was formed into a free imperial city, and was originally called Heiligbronn, which meant ?holy spring', and referred to a stream that issued from under the high altar of St. Kilian's Church, built in the Gothic and Renaissance styles with a unique tower. Later, the name of the city got altered to Heilbronn, and is often recognized by its nickname K?thchenstadt. Currently, Heilbronn is an independent city, and the seat of Heilbronn County. In addition to being popular for its wine industry, Heilbronn is a commercial centre, and also features a harbor that serves as a trans-loading point on the Rhine-Neckar shipping route. The significant industries of the city include metalworking and the manufacture of motor-vehicle parts, machinery and electronic equipment.
Despite suffering a severe damage in World War II, most of Heilbronn's historic buildings can still be seen today, as they have been successfully rebuilt or restored, such as the St. Kilian's Church and the Town Hall, preserving the gorgeous German village look. However, the house of the Teutonic Knights (Deutsches Haus) could not be restored and is in ruins. Nevertheless, numerous old towers still stand erect, including the Diebsturm, or G?tzenturm, on the Neckar. Other than the city's personal attractions, one can also site many nearby attractions, including the Audi Forum and also the Zweirad Museum, both in the nearby village, called Neckarsulm. Other nearby towns such as Bad Wimpfen and Sinsheim are also worth a visit.
