Tickets for Grosseto
A coastal city located in central Italy within the region of Tuscany, Grosseto is a town located in the marshlands of Maremma and traces its origins to the early medieval times back when the Etruscan workers used the marshes for accommodations in the Salt plains. Today, the city has assumed the status of the agriculture capital of Maremma and is a mass producer of tomatoes, olives, mushrooms, spinach, wild boar and artichokes. The city is a unique combination of historic architecture and modern spectacular views. The coastal inlands are hilly and provide a fabulous view of the beach and the sea. The city also uniquely combines woods with hard stone. The northern Maremma route from Grosseto to Siena is plied with thick woods while the rocky geography occupies most of the descent towards the coastal plains.
Grosseto has been ruled by numerous emperors in the past. The city was first gifted by St. George to the inhabitants of Vetulonia for looking after the Bishop of Rusellae. Later, in the mid 12th century, it was captured by Lothiar III by Henry of Bavaria and was consequently transferred to the then Bishop of Rusellae a year later. It came under the Siennese rule in the mid 13th century and remained so for almost a century despite two attempts for liberation. Then the priest legally handed over Grosseto to Sienna and the city was consequently fortified, the remains of which are visible today within the remnants of the fortress- the walls and the pillars- located about 6 km from the today Grosseto.
The city is rich in ancestral architectural heritage. The famous Medicean Walls are a living example. Built in the later half of the mid 16th century, they were originally designed, in a span of 19 years, to protect the city's southern border. These walls today serve as a public park and a spectacular walk area lined on one side by densely huge date trees and on the other by ancient architecture.A trip to Grosseto is incomplete without a trip to the Cathedral which is shaped into a Latin cross. One can not help but wonder over the excellent craftsmanship and patience of the architect and the laborers who built the alternative patterns of black and white marble on the veneer. Having under gone numerous restorations, the building has a Roman style and its interior is divided into two aisles with round pillars. Of the original architecture, only the decorative details and the Evangelist symbol remain today.
Another attraction close by is the once city of Roselle. Now a frazione of Grosseto, it was built over a hill to provide command and protection to the nearby valley. It is now home to the remains of the Etruscans- sulfur baths, an amphitheatre and circular walls six kilometers in circumference. The sulfur baths have been restored for medicinal uses.If you are a patron of Roman architecture, then Palazzo Aldrobrandeschi will be treat for you. Built in the 15th century, it was entirely renovated in the 19th century. Palazzo Aldrobrandeschi is a true masterpiece of art- complete with ogival mullioned windows; it is a neo-Gothic construction that is today the domicile for the seat of the province.
The city offers fishing experience at the nearby harbor residing in a medieval castle at the Castiglione della Pescaia. You will fall in love with the breathtaking view of the sea combined with the towering walls of the 12th century stone castle.A must see is the Alta Maremma- the upper Maremma. This northern part of the marshlands is situated at a height and scattered with villages such as Ravi, Scarlino, Buriano and Gavorrano. However, a picturesque sight and a must-see is the Colline Metallifere- the last of the mines, they provide a sharp contrast to the plantation that grows in the area. The chestnut trees make long walks tempting and pleasurable.
In sharp contrast to the trees is the rocky portion of the Alta Maremma, Area del Tufo. This place is a live museum inhabited by live people. Sporadic villages jutting out of the rocks are quite commonplace here and so are caves hidden in bushes. The town of Pitigliano is famous for its one of a kind placement. The town has been built on the edge of a cliff and surrounded by vineyards; this gives the place a protected look.
Having been to the north, do not miss out the southern portion of Maremma- Bassa Maremma. This part particularly enjoys attention for its fabulous coastal views and its magnificent meetings of land and water. We suggest you reserve a ticket right away before the sell out and you miss the chance of a lifetime.
