Better known as the Metropolis of the North, the city of Groningen is the only large city in the province of Groningen, Netherlands. Informally, it is referred to as the Stad by the local residents. It is also known as the MartiniStad since it is home to the Martini Tower. This city dates back to ancient times. The oldest archeological traces indicate that the city existed between 3900 - 3700 BC. However written documental evidence indicates the city's existence to be around 1000 BC. However, proper settlements date back to only around the 3rd century AD. The city sprang in importance around the 13th century serving as a trade centre. A wall was built around it by the residents highlighting the city's importance. Groningen further rose in stature in the 15th century when it served as the control centre for the province of Friesland. It was also during these times that the Martini Tower was built which was the tallest building in Europe at that time. The city's biggest mistake was to become an ally of the Spanish in the Eighty Years War since that cost it its independence. However, it later joined forces with the Republic of the Seven United Netherlands.

The University of Groningen was built in the early 17th century and as the city underwent rapid expansion, a new city wall was constructed. The city withstood a severe attack in the Third Anglo-Dutch War in the late 17th century and also bore through the World War II devastation although it did not escape the destruction. A particularly interesting fact about the city is the fact that more than half intercity transportation is accounted for by bicycles. It is for this very fact that the city is also referred to as World Cycling City. The city also supports and encourages traveling via bicycles. Temperatures remain around 30 C in summers and above freezing point in winters with occassional frost bites. Rains are abundant with yearly precipitation touching some 900 mm (average figure).

Peperstraat, Vismarkt, poelestraat and the Grote Markt are heavily crowded with beer in the rounds, a high din of voices and occasional high-pitched laughter. This is ?the' place for the youngsters of today. It was for its vibrant nightlife that the city of Groningen was declared the best city centre in 2006. Once you enter the city, do not be surprised by an occasional, strangely sweet smell. The city houses the sugar factory that produces around 400,000 tones of sugar, per annum. The factory, managed by CSM, produces beet sugar. The city also houses a football stadium- Euroborg at FC Groningen-that was inaugurated in the year 2006 with plans for extension under consideration, in addition to the old stadium- Oosterpark Stadium.
