Garden City is a village in New York, USA with its epicenter in Nassau County. The city is situated on Long Island and was founded in 1869 by a tycoon. It lies 29 km from Manhattan and to the east of NY, NY. The population of the village was estimated to be around 21,000 in the 2000 census. The locals in this village have their lineage back to Italian and Irish settlers coming from Long Island to NY, NY. The regions such as Garden City South, Garden City Park and East Garden are also influenced by the name Garden City. Roosevelt Field in the east of this village, has been the former airfield from where Charles Lindberg went off on his famous flight in 1927.

It was in 1869, when an Irish millionaire Stewart purchased some land of Hempstead Plains, and laid the foundation of Garden City. The village was initially designed for the elites wanting to break away from New York City. Garden City Hotel was the prime place in the community. The original building on the site was demolished in the 19th century but a hotel still stands there on the original site, as do many Victorian homes. Cornelia, wife of Stewart set up the St. Paul's School for boys apart from other missionary institutions. An institution worth mentioning here is the Gothic Cathedral of the Incarnation, which holds a prime central place in the Long Island.

The place was constructed by 1885. As of now, the site is again being renovated with a huge investment going on, which is expected to be completed by 2012. In the early period, Garden City prospered due to being close to Hempstead which was the commercial center of Long Island. Garden City's population multiplied due to railroad and automobiles with time. In the year 1919, the village was included as part of Garden City Estates to the West.

The community in Garden City continued growing in the 1920s, with houses being developed in the village Estates as well as the Eastern Section of Garden City. In the 1930s, hundreds of houses were constructed to go with the population boom in line with Stewart's vision. The city also served as a US Air force base for 40 years till 1961. The US forces still have a notable presence here, while the rest of the base has been taken up by other institutions. The city has its own school district with seven schools, three primary schools, two elementary schools and Middle Schools.
