It incorporated as a city in 1803, and was called Troy, from 1804 to 1834. However, in 1834, the name of the city officially altered to Fall River. This name was derived from the Quequechan River, which flows through the city. Quequechan is a Native American name which translates as Falling Water in English language.
It was during the 19th century when the City of Fall River gained fame for being the leading textile manufacturing center in the entire U.S. It remained the main center in the United States for the manufacture of cotton textiles from the 1870s to until the 1920s.
