The township was officially renamed the Town of Fairfax during 1874, and turned into an independent city during 1961. Since then, the city is called The City of Fairfax. To connect Fairfax with Washington, D.C. a railway was built in 1904; whereas, today, the city features intersection of US-50 and US-29, and major highways like VA-123 and VA-236 pass through the city. I-66 can also be found on the outskirts of the city.
