Situated in the Fairbanks North Star municipality in central Alaska, United States, Fairbanks is a self-rule city which is located on the on the Chena River, where it links with the Tanana River. Being the second-largest city in the state, and the largest in the Interior region of Alaska, Fairbanks City is the prime city of the Fairbanks, Alaska Metropolitan Statistical Area, encompassing all of the Fairbanks North Star Borough. It is also the northern-most Metropolitan Statistical Area in the US. The city had an approximate population of 34,540 during the year 2007.
The total area comprised by the city is 84.6 sq. kilometers, where 2.48% of it is covered with water. The climate which dominates the city is subarctic, and the Interior experiences a most extreme and unpredictable weather around the globe. Fairbanks is surrounded by stunning mountain and wilds panorama, and the largest city which is on the brink of the highest point in North America, Mt. McKinley. They city is convenient to reach, as it is served by an intercontinental airport and is the northern station of the Alaska Railroad and the Richardson Highway, which is connected in Delta Junction to the Alaska Highway. The Dalton Highway, running through the state to the Arctic Ocean, is also located along the City of Fairbanks.
Captain E.T. Barnette, trying to set up a trading post at Tanacross, founded the Fairbanks City in 1901, and is named in honor of a Republican senator from Indiana, known as Charles Fairbanks, who also became the 26th vice-president later. Settlement in the area began in 1902, when a gold discovery in the north of town was made. In the following year, in 1903, establishment government offices in Fairbanks took place by the Federal judge, James Wickersham. This aided largely in cementing the rapidly budding town as an important center of activity in the Interior Alaska. The products produced by the city in its early stages were agricultural goods. However, agriculture in the region was by no means enough to completely bear the population need and requirement; nevertheless, it came close in the 1920s.
Today, the City of Fairbanks, the commercial center of Alaska, is home to the states oldest college, the University of Alaska Fairbanks, along with many other points of interests located throughout the city. the Pioneer Air Museum, showcasing fourteen aircrafts with several artifacts; Creamer's Field Migratory Waterfowl Refuge; Fairbanks Curling Club; El Dorado Gold Mine; Pioneer Park; Hassan Kaplan; University of Alaska Museum of the North, and much more are available for the visitors and travelers in the city to explore.
