Stretched across 40.8 square miles on a bend of the Ohio River, Evansville is the third largest city in the State of Indiana. The city was originally settled back in 1812 although the first cabin in the city was built in 1809. At first French explorers set foot in the city and named the city La Belle Riviere which means The Beautiful River in English. The city was named after one of the founders of the city, Robert Morgan Evans, after it was laid out back in 1817. City was incorporated back in 1819 while the city charter came to the city in 1847. Due to its prime location near the Ohio River and river trade, the city of Evansville soon became the commercial city in the state. The city further boosted economically, following the completion of Wabash and Erie Canal. Both the canals connected the Ohio River with the Great Lakes.

With the further addition of Evansville & Crawfordsville Railroad, the city kept on attracting huge flocks of immigrants and soon, Evansville was ranked 56th largest city due to its population, however this rank was lost during 1900s as the population suffered a major decline, partly due to the Ohio River flood as that hit the city in 1937. The population in the city started growing once again in 1950s as the city?s industrial production saw massive expansion followed by its cultural evolution. Apart from being medical, commercial and service hub, city?s economy was further appreciated by the arrival of Toyota, Casino Aztar and AK Steel Plants in the city during 1990s.

As of now, city houses two major universities namely University of Southern Indiana, which alone now has 10,000 enrolled students and University of Evansville. As of the census readings of 2000 the total population of the city is 121,582 people that are further divided up into 30,527 families. Racially, the population of the city is comprised of 86.24% of Caucasians, 10.92% African Americans, 1.1% of Hispanics and Latinos, 0.72% Asians, 0.49% from other racers while the percentages of Native Americans and Pacific Islanders is 0.21% and 0.05% respectively.
