The history of Evanston, Illinois draws back to 1836 when the city saw its first settlement, founded by the Native Americans who named that area as Ridgeville. During that time that city used to be a part of Grosse Pointe Territory. In 1857 the city was named Evanston after John Evans, who was the leader of the founders of the Northwestern University, which was founded by the Methodists in 1851. Due to the area, Evanston was initially incorporated as a town; however the additions of villages of North and South Evanston rendered voters to elect Evanston as a city in 1892.
Census readings of 2000 stated that the city of Evanston is inhabited by 74,239 people that are further divided up in 15,952 families. Racially, populace is divided amongst 62.56% Caucasians, 22.50% African Americans, 6.11% Hispanics or Latinos, 6.09% Asians, and 2.85% of mixed races. The median income of the family came out to be $102, 258 while the per capita income for the city is $33,645.
Evanston is home to the Main campus of the Northwestern University that is stretched across 240 acres of land. Established in 1851, it is one of the oldest education institutes in Illinois that is further divided up in to eleven schools and colleges. Northwestern University has been and still is a Private Research university, with substantial amount of research activities being carried out every year, due to which, the University was also inducted in the Association of American Universities in 1917.
