Basically a town in the district - Werra-Mei?ner-Kreis, Eschwege is located in the state of Hesse, Germany. The nearby cities include Kassel and Gottingen. The total area encompassed by the city is 63.27 sq. kilometers, and the elevation is 211 meters. According to the latest estimate, in December 2006, Eschwege had an approximate population of 20,610. The current mayor of the city is Jurgen Zick.
The main town in Eschwege, today, features four Evangelical churches, whereas, the remote centers of, Niddawitzhausen, Eltmannshausen, Niederd?nzebach, Albungen, Oberhone, Niederhone and Oberd?nzebach, feature one each. In addition, the main town also has two Catholic churches, an Evangelical Free Church parish, a New Apostolic parish, and a state church community.
At present, the majority of the inhabitants of Eschwege belong to the Evangelical Church, and a small percentage of them belong to the Catholic Church. The city first got documented as a town in 974, but its origin can be traced back even before 500. Eschwege was initially called Eskiniwach, at the time of founding. This name is from an old Germanic language, meaning Settlement near the ash trees at the water. A Frankish royal court first arose here, in the Merovingian times, to keep watch as a border defense over the ford on the Werra, leading into Thuringia. Eschwege received its market rights in 1188, followed by town rights after 1249. At the same time, the foundation for the cloth and leather-making was laid down, and it thrives on into the current times as well.
The City of Eschwege holds many attractions for its residents and visitors alike. Significant museums can be sited in the city, which tell the history and culture of the area, such as the Eschweger Zinnfiguren- und Miniaturenkabinett, Heimatmuseum, Stadtmuseum Eschwege, and Freunde der Eisenbahn. As the city was once a medieval town, it still comprises rows of timber-frame houses and buildings like Neust?dter Kirche St. Katharina, Eschwege Landgraves' Palace, Hochzeitshaus, Marktkirche St. Dionys, and Hospital chapel,a long with many others.
