St. Elizabeth, one of Jamaica's largest parishes, is located in the southwest of the island, in the county of Cornwall. In the 18th and 19th century, huge quantity of logwood was taken to Europe from here to create a Prussian-blue dye. The northern parts of this rural community are composed of mountainous regions. These mountains include the Nassau Mountains to the northeast, the Lacovia Mountains to the west of the Nassau Mountains, and the Santa Cruz Mountains. The land around these mountains is ideal for grazing horses and for cultivation. The main river flowing through this town is the Black River, which is 534 km long. Many tributaries join into the river. The river flows through surrounding towns and ends in the plain called Savvanah.The land of Saint Elizabeth is rich is mines such as bauxite. The Alpart alumina refinery is built here since 1960s and is a leading producer of alumina, which is used for export.There are other alumina refineries close to the nearby town of Mandeville.
Besides mining, the town is a leading producer of sugar. Factories for refining sugar have been setup. The seaport is used for fishing.
