Tickets for Eindhoven
The City of Eindhoven is located in the province of Noord-Brabant in the South of Netherlands. The city is situated at the point where the famous streams of Dommel and Gender come together. The stream of Gender doesn?t exist anymore but you can see the Dommel river flow through the city even today. The city is largely populated with 440,000 people. The metropolitan area has nearly 750,000 population. The city?s history dates back to 1232, when the Duke Hendrik I of Brabant had granted permission to convert a small town and give the status of a city. The name of the city stands for ?End Yards?, for its location at the southern end of Woensel. When the city of Eindhoven came into existence, there were around 170 houses. On the external side of the city, stood a famous castle. The city also featured a trade route from Holland to Liege.
By the year 1388, the defenses of the city were improved even more. As a result, a new castle was built between 1413 and 1420. However, the fortification was not strong enough to withstand the troops from Gelderland, resulting in the fall of Eindhoven in 1543. In the Year 1554, misfortune struck the city and most of the houses were burnt. In the year 1560, William I of Orange made efforts to rebuild the city. After this, a couple of times, the entire city was brought down by the Spanish troops. However, until the year 1629, Eindhoven did not become part of Netherlands. This was followed by French occupation where the invading forces once again caused damage to the city and its inhabitants. Until the time, the industrial revolution came, Eindhoven was still considered as a small city.
The coming of the industrial revolution brought prospers to the city. New roads and canals were built. Industries began to be setup and the city saw the rising of the center of electronics and lighting, the famous ?Philips? who was founded in the city of Eindhoven in 1891. With the flourishing of industries, need was felt to improve the administration aspects of the city. This was followed by the boom of technical industries in the city and the foundation of a car and truck manufacturing company, namely Van Doorne's Automobiel Fabriek (DAF). The destructions made in World War II did not spare the city of Eindhoven either. Once the war was over and efforts for reconstruction were made, there were very few historical remains left.
The follow up years saw total rehabilitation of the city with new houses and districts built, thus turning Eindhoven into the fifth largest city in Netherlands.
