The locations of Edwinstowe are those, which we have been hearing in the Robin Hood stories of our childhood. The village Edwinstowe is named after Edwin who was the King of North Umbria. The Kingdom of Edwin spanned huge area starting from the River Trent to Edinburgh, Scotland. The King Edwin had married a Christian Princess from Kent namely Ethelburga.
The Bishop Paulinus baptized Princess Ethelburga on Easter Sunday 625 A.D. in a small church. You can still see the site where Edwin and Ethelburga were baptized. After their return, people began to call him Saint Edwin and built a small wooden chapel as his memorial. A priest stayed here and this is how Edwinstowe became known as the holy place of Edwin.

Later it was replaced by a small structure of stone in 1175 A.D.The church has a tower, which stands there since the 14th Century. On this tower, stands a broach spire, which fell down due to lightening in 1672 A.D. However, the villagers got together and requested King Charles II to give permission to use timber from the forest for the repairs of the spire.
Behind the church is a land, which spans an area of 2.5 acre. This area has the graves of some of very interesting personas such as the Reverend Ebenezer Cobham Brewer.
