Den Haag
Den Haag or The Hague is the third largest city of Netherlands in the Province of South Holland. The History of Den Haag goes back to 1230, when the piece of land was bought by the Count of Holland, Floris IV in order to construct a Hunting Residence. However later in 1248 that residence was transformed into a palace, and so the history of the city starting growing ever since then.
Ever since its formation Den Haag has been the center of administrative activities of the Netherlands, hence the city was also called Des Graven Hage which means the count"s wood in English as different counts of Holland chose Den Haag as their capital. Even after when Dukes of Burgundy claimed their control over Counties of Holland, the seat of the advisory Council was also located in Den Haag.
Since being the center administrative activities, Den Haag never became a city until the conquest of King Louis Napoleon in 1806. Later on Belgium and Netherlands were both combined, only to be separated once again in 1830, after which, although Amsterdam became the capital of Netherlands, but still the government seats were located in Den Haag.
The City of Den Haag is rich in its historical inheritance. The City houses a still operating church that dates back to 15th century and a 17th Century Protestant Church along with elegantly built City Hall of 16th century and several palaces dating back from the 17th century. Den Haag saw a boost of expansion in 1850 after when government started playing more vital role in Dutch Society. Although the Atlantic War and the World War II severely damaged the city, but by the time the war was over, the restoration and expansion process of the city once again took wind, and city along with the population started growing massively.
Although the city of Den Haag is culturally diverse since a number of foreigners are residing in the city, the city however lacks an actual university, due to which student culture at the city is near to nothing. On the North Sea, The Hague is the largest of all the Dutch cities, and has two, immensely popular beach resorts. One of them is called Scheveningen while the other one is Kijkduin. Of these two, Scheveningen is the most famous and largest seas resort that attracts more than 10 Million visitors every year. Scheveningen is not merely a sea resort it is also one of the right districts of The Hague.
Every year a number of festivals and events are also placed at The Hague. The upcoming events include the Festival Classique, which is a series of live music concerts scheduled on 12, 13, and 14 of June, for the third running year The Hague Festival "09 would also kick off on June 12 and will last till 28. The Hague would also host Parkpop 2009 which is the largest free pop festival in Europe, along with many other events scheduled this year.
