Dallas, part of the fourth largest metropolitan area of the country, is the ninth-largest city in the whole of USA and the third-largest in the State of Texas.

The total area covered by the City of Dallas, TX is about 343 square miles, featuring a population of 1,240,499. While partly lying in counties such as Collin, Denton, and Kaufman, Dallas, TX is wholly the seat of Dallas County. Located on the Trinity River, Dallas experiences a humid subtropical climate and receives warm, dry winds from the north and west during the summer season; whereas, the winters in Dallas are usually mild.

It is largely believed that the name of the city, Dallas, was basically derived from the vice president of the U.S., George Mifflin Dallas (1845-1849). However, a few historians are also of the view that the possible sources for the name of the city could have been the Commodore Alexander J. Dallas of the navy, the brother of George Mifflin Dallas, or the city might have been named for one of the early settlers in 1842, Joseph Dallas.

Traditionally, Dallas has always been the hub of transportation and marketing, and in the past, the city was the center for these services only for the north area of Texas. It during the 20th century when the City of Dallas developed into a main finance, trade, commerce and a manufacturing center for the southwestern area of the United States of America and also Mexico.

Dallas was initially discovered in 1941 by a Tennessee lawyer, John Nelly Bryan, and his Arkansan friend, Joe Dallas, as a plain trading post. Then in the February of 1856, Dallas was incorporated as a city. Today, Dallas has a diversified economic base. Though the city lacks any navigable link to the sea, it is still very prominent due to its historical importance as a hub for the cotton and oil industries, a strong industrial and financial sector, its position alongside several railroad lines, and its status as a most important inland port. In addition, Dallas continues to be a significant financial, distribution, and insurance center of the Southwest, having one of the largest concentrations of trade amenities in the Southwest and South on the whole.

Being the hub of culture in northern Texas, Dallas is a city that is very rich in culture and arts. Educational institutions like Paul Quinn College and the University Of Texas Southwestern Medical Center at Dallas are only two of the various other universities located in the city.
