In recent years, Cleveland has toiled hard to develop itself into one of the most livable cities in the US. It has made a significant effort making sure its old-money cultural institutions stayed viable. A town of diligent and working men has not only fixed up its waterfronts but also got the urban river-on-fire thing under control.
Cleveland is the most populous city in the U.S. state of Ohio. As of the US Census 2000, the region had a total population of 478,403 inhabitants but it continued growing. The city lies within the humid continental climate zone and receives warm humid summers and cold snowy winters.
After the Civil war, Cleveland became one of the biggest steel producers in US. It broadened its economic horizons to machinery production, clothing & chemicals textiles and became a centre of socially progressive policies. However, with the decline of heavy manufacturing, Cleveland"s businesses diversified into the service economy, including the insurance and financial services, and healthcare sectors.
Cleveland has a plethora of attractions that are clustered around downtown and Case Western Reserve University and share diverse architecture. A cluster of the city"s government and civic buildings, including City Hall, the Cuyahoga County Courthouse, the Cleveland Public Library, and Public Auditorium have a common neoclassical architecture.
The two recently built steely skyscrapers on Public Square; including BP building and Key Tower have Art Deco architecture combined with contemporary designs. The Old Arcade is another of architectural landmark that Cleveland possesses.
Cleveland is home to many botanical gardens and parks in the countywide Cleveland Metroparks system, the "Emerald Necklace" of Olmsted-inspired parks that surrounds the area. The Cleveland Metroparks Zoo is nestling in the Big Creek valley, which contains the largest collection of primates of any zoo in the United States.
The other county-known parks are parts of the Rocky River, Brookside Park, and Washington Reservations. Apart from the Metroparks, Cleveland Lakefront State Park too gives masses an access to Lake Erie. The City of Cleveland"s Rockefeller Park is also must-see place when exploring Cleveland attractions. Cleveland is home to Playhouse Square Center which is the second largest performing arts center in the United States. The Playhouse Square center features the State, Palace, Allen, Hanna, and Ohio theaters within the area called the "Theater District of Downtown Cleveland".
The performing arts companies associated with the playhouse Square center include the Cleveland Opera, the Ohio Ballet, and the Great Lakes Theater Festival. The center also anchors a notable number of Broadway musicals, special concerts, speaking engagements, and other events and activities throughout the year.
Cleveland Orchestra is widely recognized for featuring one of the finest orchestras in the world. The town takes pride to be a home of the finest Cleveland Orchestra. The Cleveland orchestra is one of the "Big Five" major orchestras in US. The Orchestra is played at Blossom Music center during the summer and in Severance Hall during the winter.
Museums in Cleveland have strong attraction for the residents as well as outsiders alike. There are two main art museums in the town. The Cleveland Museum of Art has more than 40,000 works of American art on showcases. "Museum of Contemporary Art Cleveland" promotes the art works of Cleveland"s emerging and established artists, through anchoring and producing their exhibitions.
The city of Cleveland is home to many music bands playing music of different genres. The heavy metal music groups Chimaira and Mushroomhead, alternative rock groups Nine Inch Nails and Filter, hip hop group Bone Thugs-n-Harmony, Eric Carmen and his band, The Raspberries began their careers in Cleveland. Besides, Cleveland has also served as the filming location for several popular movies, including The Fortune Cookie, Deer Hunter, Antwone Fisher and A Christmas Story.
Cleveland has a diverse population and so is its culture. Many immigrant groups have contributed significantly in defining the regional cuisine. German and Eastern European foods, such as beer, pierogi, and kielbasa are quite popular in and around the city.
