The name of the city is due to the large lake on which it is situated. According to the year 2000 census, the population of the city was 8,161.

The city of Clear Lake originated in 1850 when two men arrived in this area after learning about a beautiful lake there. They arrived in the city in the year 1851 with their group and made the region their home thus settling there.

The picturesque beauty of Clear Lake itself is an attention grabber. It is estimated that Clear Lake is about 2.5 million years old making it the oldest lake in North America. The average depth of the lake is 10 feet and the maximum depth is 19 feet.

Most of all its the fishermen who flock here since it is a popular fishing spot, with different kinds of fish found in the lake. The same reason enticed people from the adjoining areas to settle on the shores of the lake since the 1870s.
For those interested in pursuing higher education, the city has some great institutions like the North Iowa Area Community College and then there is Iowa Central Community College. Prominent universities like Iowa State University and Minnesota State University also conform to the serious needs of the students in the area as well as abroad.
For a business person who is looking for a place to move his or her business, the Industrial Park section of town is the right avenue. It is situated just a couple of minutes from the Mason City Municipal Airport.
Industrial Park is located just off of Interstate 35 and only a couple minutes from the Mason City Municipal Airport. The tenants of the Industrial Park comprise a big food processing business, an industrial coating business and two large producers of heavy gear. The main attraction of Clear Lake city is the The Surf Ballroom which is a momentous Rock and Roll venue on the northeast shore of a lake of the same name. Rock and Roll Hall of Fame granted this Ballroom the status of a certified Rock and Roll Hall of Fame historical landmark in January 2009.
The venue was constructed in 1933, but it caught fire in 1947 reduced to ashes. It was reinstalled a year later across the street. The venue frequently hosts events and has a capacity of 2,100 seats. The Ballroom also encompasses a music museum and a Hall of Fame of the performers who enthralled the audience here in the past.
The other highlights of the city includes going around the Fort Custer Maze which covers nearly two acres with two miles of trail to puzzle you! Scores of festivals hosted by Clear Lake like Color the Wind Kite Festival, Lakeside Dixie Fest, Harvest Festival and Iowa Storytelling Festival are held in the city each year.
Clear Lake also features some other exciting thrills for those who want to have the best of fun. Lady of the Lake is a ferry boat which ensures joyful cruise on the lake to the passengers with scenic beauty. Next, Clear Lake Fire Museum serves you with some lessons while simulating an early fire station.
The museum includes an 1883 hand-pulled cart and an original fire bell used. A chapel Guardian Angel Roadside constructed by Jack Kennedy is also one of the landmarks here.
