In 1808, the Chautauqua County was developed, which included the eastern row of townships, making the town and the new county coextensive, and ultimately increasing the towns territory. Chautauqua Town is considered the Mother of Towns in Chautauqua County, as all the other towns of the county were once part of it.

Nevertheless, Chautauqua town is still the largest town of the County. It comprises an area of 67.3 sq. miles in total, where 67.2 sq. miles of it is land and 0.1 sq. miles is water. At the 2000 census, Chautauqua Town had a population of 4,666. The surrounding towns include Portland, Stockton, Ellery, North Harmony, Sherman, and Westfield. Towns two most important roads are New York State Route 394 and New York State Route 430.
