Castlebar
The county town of, and at the centre of, County Mayo in Ireland, known as Castlebar, is Mayo's largest town. The town is connected by railway to Dublin and the neighboring Mayo towns of Westport and Ballina and the main route by road is the N5.

There are several small satellite villages around the town, such as Breaffy. A campus of Galway-Mayo Institute of Technology and the Country Life section of the National Museum of Ireland are two important local comforts.

The town is also famous for being the location for important festivals and traditions, which includes musical events, art exhibitions and the very famous International Four Days Walk.

The name of the town comes from the castle built in 1235, known as the Caisle?n an Bharraigh in French, meaning Barry's Castle. When we go back in search of the history of the town of Castlebar, we discover that the modern town grew up as a settlement around the de Barry castle, built by a Norman adventurer, and was later the site of an English garrison.

A military barracks operates in the town to this day, and the armed conflict has been the centrepiece of the town's historical heritage. French forces under the command of General Humbert aided in a rout of the English garrison in the town during the failed Irish Rebellion of 1798.

This was so comprehensive that it would be known as The Races of Castlebar. A shortlived provisional Republic of Connaught was declared following the victory and John Moore, head of the Mayo United Irishmen and the brother of a local landowner, was declared its president.

His remains are today hemmed in a corner of the town green, known as the Mall. The town received its charter from King James I in 1613 and is today governed by an urban district council, a subdivision of Mayo County Council.

Castlebars culture is rich, as it has long been the hub for important festivals and traditions, like the International Four Days' Walk. Events like the well established blues music festival in venues across the town takes place on the weekend before the first Monday in June each year. Castlebar experienced significant immigration, growth and investment throughout the 1980s and the 1990s.

The Linenhall Arts Centre exhibits throughout the year, as well as hosting live drama and music performances. The Linenhall also organises an annual children's arts festival called the Roola Boola.

The only branch of the National Museum of Ireland located outside Dublin is the Museum of Country Life, located on the outskirts of Castlebar. This museum is among the landmark sights and buildings of Ireland. Another very important venue is the Royal Theatre and Event Centre, with a capacity of two thousand two hundred fully seated and four thousand standing, and hosts larger-scale productions and popular music concerts.

A recently-established Mayo male voice choir and Mayo Orchestra is the addition in the towns attractions. Roman Catholic, Church of Ireland, Elim Pentecostal and Spiritualist churches are also located in the town.

The local Gaelic football and hurling team is the Castlebar Mitchels club. They are a club with a proud and illustrious past including 2 Mayo football championship victories. The club boasts a very strong underage hurling structure. McHale Park located in Castlebar is one of the major Gaelic Athletic Association grounds in Connacht with a capacity of 36,000.

The Mayo County board has recently submitted a planning application to increase the capacity to 41,000, which includes a whole new stand to replace the existing one and adding fifteen extra rows of seat to the 'Albany' end.

Further development will also lead to the knocking of the press area on the McHale road side and replacing it with a modern press area and TV stand. The local soccer team is Castlebar Celtic. They currently have a team playing in the Mayo Super League.

The town of Castlebar has a selection of places to eat and drink and there is a broad range of types of food available like Italian, Indian, Chinese, Irish, and fast food as well as cafes like Cafe Rua, Moka and McCarthys.

The famous places to dine include El Moretto, Portifino, An Carraig, Cafollas, Danollas, Blue Thunder, Top Nosh, Supermacs, McDonalds and Apache Pizza. The only nightclub in Castlebar is Mantra, located on New Antrim Street and owned by The Welcome Inn Hotel. There are also a few late bars located in the town. The oldest and the most famous in Castlebar is John McHale's pub, located on New Line.

Traditionally, Castlebar is a market town and is the third largest retail centre in Connacht. The town is a major destination for shoppers from all over the west of Ireland.

It boasts an increasing number of national and international chain stores, and several new shopping areas have been developed in the past 10-12 years on what were considered the outskirts of the town.

The modern shopping precinct along Hopkins Road is now the commercial heart of the town, surpassing Main Street. Come and visit this amazing town and have the time of your life here!
