Cambridge, Massachusetts is a city in the Greater Boston area of Massachusetts, United States. It earned its name from the University of Cambridge in England.

Cambridge is primarily known for two prominent universities, Harvard University and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. According to US Census 2000 estimates, the city had a population of 101,355 making it the fifth most populous city in the state.

The city of Cambridge is a county seat of Middlesex County, Massachusetts, along with Lowell. Though the government of Middlesex County was abolished in 1997, however it still exists as a geographical and political region. The employees of Middlesex County courts, jails, registries, and other county agencies are engaged in the state affairs directly.

Economy
At the turn of 20th century, Cambridge received a good reputation as a major manufacturer. A large number of people were involved in this business. But the current century brought new challenges, thus transforming its former reputation into university-oriented city.

However, Cambridges economy does not dependent on educational sector only, therere other factors equally strengthening it. Its economy is diversified into education, technology and private services mainly. At present, long-established educational institutions are engaging its biggest employers; Harvard employs over 10,000 people and MIT over 9,500.

Since Cambridge is a cradle of technological innovation, it is also home to legendary technology firms, including Analog Devices, VMware, Akamai, BBN, Lotus Development Corporation, Polaroid, Thinking Machines, and Google. Over the years, as companies have gained momentum, prospered, and then either moved away or gone out of business, the citys large-scale employment has shifted tremendously.

In 1996, Polaroid, Arthur D. Little, and Lotus were all Cambridges top employers with over 1,000 people in the city, but all declined and disappeared a few years later. As of 2005, alongside Harvard and MIT, health care and biotechnology rose to prominence in the Cambridge economy, with Genzyme, Biogen Idec, and Novartis the biggest players.

The university part at MIT is home to a number of biotechnology companies which have proven to be a new development in another former manufacturing area. None of the computer-industry firms that once had monopoly over the citys economy are top-20 employers. However, many smaller start-ups and entrepreneurial companies have been working significantly on Cambridge employment scene.

The sites which were turned into markers had some relationship to important events or person. The other significant marker is African-American Heritage Trail, installed in 1993. North Cambridge Historic Markers are the newest group installed in 2003-04.

The oldest group of historic markers - Granite tombstone Markers - was installed in the last quarter of the nineteenth century. It attracts people for its tombstone-shaped-granite.
