Details of Braunschweig and the Ticket Luck value

Braunschweig
Braunschweig is a city located in Lower Saxony, Germany, north of the Harz Mountains at the farthest navigable point of the Oker river, which connects to the North Sea via the rivers Aller and Weser.

It is known as Brunswiek in Low German and the historic English name for Braunschweig is Brunswick. Germany's reunification revitalized Braunschweig's role as an important European hub.

According to statistics, it is Europe's most active research and development region, as over 27,000 people are employed in research and development here and 7.1 percent of the gross domestic product is invested in research, which puts Braunschweig ahead of Silicon Valley.

Thus, unsurprisingly, the "Lion City" was chosen as Germany's "City of Science" in 2007. As a tradition, it is believed that Braunschweig was created through the merger of two settlements, one founded by Bruno II, a Saxon count who died before 1017 on one side of the river Oker and the other the settlement of Count Dankward, after whom the still surviving Castle Dankwarderode is named.

The original name of the town Brunswik is a combination of the name Bruno and wik, a place where merchants rested and stored their goods. Therefore, the name of the town suggests the town to be an ideal resting-place, as it lay by a ford across the Oker River.

Another explanation of the city's name is that it comes from Brand, or burning, indicating a place which developed after the landscape was cleared through burning. Braunschweig was made the capital of the state of Duke Henry the Lion in the 12th century and later in the 13th century to the middle of the 17th century Braunschweig was a member of the Hanseatic League.

In the 18th century Braunschweig was not only a political, but also a cultural centre. Emilia Galotti by Lessing and Goethe's Faust for the first time performed in Braunschweig then. The main residence of the rulers of the Duchy of Brunswick was Braunschweig.

Braunschweig was a Sub-area Headquarters of Military District XI in World War II. It was also the garrison city of the 31st Infanterie Division, which took part in the invasions of Poland, Belgium, France, and Russia, and was largely destroyed during the German withdrawal from Russia.

The city was severely damaged by Anglo-American aerial attacks, however, the Cathedral, which had been converted to a National shrine, still stood. After the war, Braunschweig ceased to be a capital when the Free State of Brunswick was dissolved by the Allied occupying authorities.

The rebuilding of the city was intended to make it modern and automobile-oriented and in the 1990s efforts increased to reconstruct historic buildings that had been destroyed in the air raid. Today, the City of Braunschweig has cultural and economic richness, a beautiful historic center and the residents of the city enjoy true quality of life.

The city is located at the country's most important east-west arteries of transportation, including railroad, Autobahn, and the Hanover airport, and has comfortable connections to national and international destinations.

Its infrastructure is excellent, providing the basics for companies like Volkswagen Financial Services, Siemens and Intel. Braunschweig is one of Germany's most important industrial areas and offers a perfect environment for international companies.

Today Braunschweig is known for its University and research institutes, mainly the Federal Agricultural Research Centre and the PTB, the Physikalisch-Technische Bundesanstalt, the national institute of natural and engineering sciences and the highest technical authority for metrology and physical safety engineering of the Federal Republic of Germany.

The oldest technical university in Germany is the Technische Universität Carolo-Wilhelmina zu Braunschweig, which was founded in 1745. It"s also one of the country's leading universities and a member of the TU9, the association of the nine leading technical universities in Germany; the Braunschweig University of Art, and University of Applied Sciences Braunschweig/Wolfenbuttel are also worth mentioning.

The city also comprises of a research airport. The sights to see in this beautiful city of Braunschweig include: Castle, built by Henry the Lion, 12th century; Cathedral; Altstadtmarkt - "old town market"; Aegidienkirche church, with an adjoining monastery, which is today a museum; The "Rizzi-Haus" which is a highly distinctive, cartoonish office building designed by architect James Rizzi; Herzog Anton Ulrich Museum.

If you want to plan a pleasant day trip exploring the city of Braunschweig then you must head towards Hildesheim. It is a beautiful medieval town famous for its UNESCO-cultural heritage Cathedrals, market place and old half-timbered houses, or you can also plan a day trip to Hamelin, the beautiful town famous for the folk tale of the Pied Piper of Hamelin.

Another option can be the residential city of the Dukes of Brunswick- Wolfenbuttel.

Braunschweig is so popular around the world that many places are named after it, like the Canadian province of New Brunswick, Brunswick Mountain in British Columbia, Brunswick Peninsula in Chile, as well as several towns in the US. If you are also intrigued by the history, culture, and beautiful sights of the city then you must plan a trip to Braunschweig soon!
